Re: Fiberglass Creases, Wrinkles, Bubbles, oh my!

It's not critical to have it be a 45* ! If you get even a little bias angle, it will work . It's mostly to make the cloth lay better.
Wet cloth can be "Massaged" to lay flat. You just work it a little more.

Yeah ! I've been gluing up cutting boards lately, and like you. Butter both sides of a joint.

There is plenty of glue dripping, but no Voids. I have my share of OCD !

Re: Fiberglass Creases, Wrinkles, Bubbles, oh my!

I find no need to recoat with epoxy.

I simply varnish over the sanded bias strips ! Even though the weave is visible, after sanding. the Varnish hides it.

Re: Fiberglass Creases, Wrinkles, Bubbles, oh my!

#1 Yeah it will look ugly,, until you varnish. but sand the area where the bias strips will go. Apply wide one first. the next one right on top, right away. You can try Peel Ply, or Saran wrap,to compress the cloth, but not necessary. Let it cure over night and the next day apply 3 fill coats. Wait ...

Re: First Build Questions

Great Questions stu ! . Two layers of Bias strips is enough. 3 are likely to show a little bit more. Biggest strip first ! A note I will add from experience ! I don't like wrapping the cloth around the stems. I trim flush to the end. If you wrap ? You may end up with a small gap, or bubble. Remember...

Re: Wilderness Tripping in a 15' Ranger?

I've always fallen into the group, that says Size matters. And Bigger is better. But I also take too much, and too heavy gear ! The skills you've learned on this one will make your next one better ! So get this one on the water, and test it, on some overnighters, and make your observations based on ...

Re: First Build Questions

Looks Great Stu ! I have a stool like yours, and it's handy. A trick I've learned is tilting the strongback, now that you are filling one side of the the Football. Simply c-clamp a couple of 2x4s to the forms. I put feet on mine, but not necessary. https://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/JimDodd/I...

Re: Nokomis

I don't know about Bass Wood, Aspen does stay white, after glassing.
Walnut is fine. Remember hard woods won't sand as easily, but a cabinet scraper, or a carbide paint scraper, should work on them.

Good Luck.
Loved Oregon the few times I was able to make it out There !

Re: Nokomis

Sorry for the delay. My feature strip was made using Aspen for the White. It stays White, as opposed to light colored Cedar. The Dark was just really dark WRC. The Strips were all all 3/4" after bead and coving. Yes pieces are butt joined, using wood glue. Before cutting the feature strip piece...

Re: Stripping the Redbird

WOW !

Your story brings Home the necessity of PPEs, in this day and age !

I know the epoxy can take years to fully cure, especially if not properly mixed !

Be careful and good luck ! There is so much around us, that can do us harm !

Your hull looks Great George ! I like the strip combination. I always like a different colored strip, close to the 4" waterline, so another paddler can a check my trim Fore and Aft ! Glad you are finding ways to hold the strips to the hull ! Curious why so much tape (Green) to hold the blocks i...
