the bad gunnel job
Well here is a couple pics of it. You'll see in the one photo how they are tilted up pretty hard at the decks. I aint to pleased with it, kinda mulling around now on how to go about fixing it. Thinking of thining it down thickness wise some more then rounding them. The deck pic I tried wetting down,...

I bought it at home depot....has the roundcutting edge, not the 4 forked looking kind. Kind of an oversite here on my part, didnt think of ordering a good o...

cutting wood plugs
Curious how you cut wooden plugs with a plug cutter without burning them? Did this on the stems and it left a dark ring around the plugs. I'm hoping to leave the plugs ash like the gunnels as when rounding I may end up into them.....readlly dont think a contrast color here would look too good expose...

HEy Dave, Good to hear from ya again. Wish I would have read this today, went and picked up some system 3 varnish......so far everyone I've talked ot up here really likes it, most of them are sailors. I hope it works. How about gluing in the plugs on my gunnels with it? If I head to sitka again this...

Mike, I'm up in Fairbanks. Spend my summers in Sitka working as a charter boat captian. Wel did, not sure if I'm going to skipper this summer or not. Would like too, we'll see. Either way I need to be on the water, somewhere, somehow! I got it bad ;). I didnt think varnish was a real hot item as for...

varnish compatability?
Just curious if I can use the system 3 varnish on Raka epoxy and glass? It's the only marine grade varnish I can find locally. Getting close, fitting the outer gunnels tonight.....

A bounce back trick that works quite well is to use heat and lots of it. If this is going to end up a problem.....try this. Steam bend like you normally would, let it dry....then unclamp, add a wide (wider then the piece to be heated for protection) strip of metal so the flame doesnt get to the wood...

well tried thinning the long piece of the inner gunnel to thin and ended up screwing it up in the table saw. Never have changed the blade out from when I was doing the cedar to a regular more heavier duty blade. Well dunno how but I managed to cut at an angle so I was 5/16 on the top and 3/16ths on ...

I cant say I'm an expert so take it as it may. I have had to do some repair work already before varnishing. Dropped the decks a couple of times with some sharp enough corners to ding the glass. What I noticed was getting it flat again wasnt a big deal. But if you sand to wood, you're going to see it...
