Re: Form Base Height for stem clearance - Prospector 16
Hey Brian My copy is opposite what you are describing. Baseline / Center line done, forms drawn and keel is nearest the baseline, and you go out and up to the sheer. Since the sheer is different for each form, I'll have to pick an arbitrary line above and make it the same distance from the baseline...

Re: Form Base Height for stem clearance - Prospector 16
Hi Brian I must be missing something both in the Canoecraft and in your post on lofting. I have the forms all drawn according to the numbers on the Charts. That gives me the form shape, but mentions nothing about the height of the forms off the strong-back. I see in your referenced post that you hav...

Form Base Height for stem clearance - Prospector 16
Hi all.. During my Sairy Gamp build I’m drawing up a set of forms for the Chestnut Prospector, shown in CanoeCraft, 97 vintage. I have the basic forms drawn w/sheerlines marked. I’m building on my strong-bench which is 16’ long and 10” wide. I’ve noticed some folks having to carve up their bench be...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs
Been busy at the ranch the past few days, but kept pluggin away, in the evenings, and got the accent strips glued up. Now to plane them, as well as all the other strips, down to 3/16" thickness. Then it's back to the shed to start in. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/rehdbrown/Sairy%20Ga...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs
Looks good Jim. Just got word today that the company I'm building the Sairy Gamp for decided not to carry our wood at this time, and no longer needs the canoe. So, guess the grandkids scored a boat to play with. We have several logs to slice up and we'll be offering wood to some of the local Surfbo...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs
Now ya tell me..! :-p Well, I'm already this far with the dowels, but next time, using a long length or a partial strip both sound like excellent options. I'm using my stack of pony clamps to hold strips in place and there's about 300 of them. I can work continuously around the boat, clamping one s...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs
Pulled the stems off the molds and separated them. Stood the stem molds in place and got a better look at the canoe. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/rehdbrown/Sairy%20Gamp%20Build/Stem%20boards%2008.jpg Started putting together some of the accent strips. These go in the football area. http:/...

Re: Table of Offsets Chestnut Prospector
I always simplified it even further. One chart has the form crossing the horizontal lines and the other has the form crossing the vertical lines. When there are long areas where the form doesn't touch one set, you just don't get enough information to get a fair curve. I also noticed that Brians des...

Re: Table of Offsets Chestnut Prospector
Stephen & Brian This copy of Canoecraft is 1997 vintage. Chart B - Station 0, at 16" from baseline, the distance out reads 16 3/4" (14 7/8" up) and Station 7 - at 24" from baseline, the distance out reads 2 3/8" (22 5/8" up) The 14 7/8" & 22 5/8" figu...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs
Thanks Brian My idea was to put the 1/4" accent onto a narrow regular strip and do the B&C. My concern is, sanding the hull to fair it, if you sand more in some areas, it will remove more of the thin cove piece, making the accent strip vary in width. However, I see what you are saying abou...

Table of Offsets Chestnut Prospector
Hi Brian or Jim or ..? I am curious about some of the numbers in the Prospectors offsets. Table B.. at east station, the last number down has another number followed by "and Up". The numbers, whether lower or higher than the station # matches the sheer line from Table A. I'm not sure what...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs
I'd be a tad leary of putting 1/4" strips through the router. That's why I'm gluing them to the next strip, then routing them. As you say, each to their own. Sitting down to draw out the stations for the 16' Prospector. So far my grandsons haven't had time to come by and help, or learn. But, I...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs
After gluing up the stems this morning, I went out and set out my strips and figured out where I wanted them, then I started gluing up the accent strips. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/rehdbrown/Sairy%20Gamp%20Build/Accent%20Pieces%2001.jpg Just a passing thought, but, since I’m gluing two ...
