The Quest to be uniform

Glenn, that's a great method! I used my Shopsmith to rip my strips. It was quite a process, as it has only about a 2 foot table and was cutting 16 foot boards! I have a Skilsaw and might give your method a try if I can't get access to a real table saw with an outfeed table long enough. I have to tel...

Hand Plane's my middle name

But after reading Jim D's post, I am more tempted to try the router bits. I just didn't have the dough to buy an untried method (for me) and I didn't find this forum until I was almost done with the wood on my first one. The only think that concerns me is figuring out how to ensure that all the stri...

Thanks for all the good input!

I really appreciate all of your thoughts. I did notice some flex (like maybe an inch or so) in the middle of the boat as we paddled down river. I had 2 layers of 6 oz on the outside and one inside. I made sure to bring the gunwhales to the width on the plans, though this necessatated spreading them ...

Negative Rocker?!?

I built my first stripper, a White Guide 18 1/2 footer from Gil Gilpatrick's book. She came out a real beauty, especially for a first effort. One thing I noticed, and have seen on many other boats, including commercially produced boats, is that they seem to have negative rocker. The bow and stern ar...

I built my first canoe ( an 18 1/2' White Guide) from Gil Gilpatrick's book. It's stemless, but uses two wraps of fiberglass around the bow and stern before the main cloth is put on. On it's maiden voyage down the Gallatin river at flood stage, my novice bow person panicked at a tight turn. We hit t...

I knew that I would be lining my canoe at some point, and that I wanted the painter lines down low to the water to help stabilize the canoe, but I didn't want holes in my hull where water was going to be splashing in all the time. So I bent some 1/2" copper tubing into a "C" shape, cu...

Try Elmers

I used Elmers sandable, stainable filler (it's water-based) to fill the holes I had in my first White Guide 18 1/2 footer. The stuff comes in a couple of colors, so I was able to mix and match pretty well. It dries fast, and did a good job of making the holes disappear, though it took some time. It ...
