I just discovered this web site. They sell a contoured seat along with the standard canoe seats. The prices are attractive too!

To StoneHollow: Tried www.shop.com and got a blank page? Another great web site for tools is www.highlandwoodworking.com ...until recently they were called Highland Hardware. They sell a very highly rated bandsaw blade called the "wood slicer". Thanks for posting the pic of the Wee Lassie....

Fish, I used a fish fry cooker to generate the steam. The balloon tank has a safety valve that I punched out and used the hole created for the hose. As you can see, I have used this setup on several projects and my steambox(pvc pipe) has bent. I guess it's time for a new one. http://img.photobucket....

I used rectangular shaped brass stem band material ordered from "Online Metals"....found them using google search. I drilled hole for the brass screws, but didn't countersink. I pulled the stem down tight into some thickened epoxy, and after a few days hacksawed off the screw heads. I file...

I like to use a brass stem band(3/8X1/8). It helps me during the shaping process to keep the stem uniform. I just put a rectangular brass strip (same dim as previously mentioned)on my Huron project. It's stronger than the rounded strip, and it's not as likely to break during installation. I plan to ...

Sorry I never got to meet this fellow Georgian. I did read some of his WoodenBoat articles, and I always enjoyed his humor and unusual writing style.

I do plan to purchase his book "How to build a tin Canoe". Robb will be missed.

Take a look at Sept/Oct 1992 WoodenBoat magazine for article on building double paddle. It demonstrates traditional building methods. Shows how to modify a hand plane to make the curved plade. :thinking

To Glen: I did not follow your explanation to SnowMan. The overall height of my molds gets shorter as I approach the stems, and I do cut the sheer lines as I produce the molds. My procedure must be totally different! :thinking Also, having access to CAD and large scale plotters, I draw (plot only ha...

To Glenn: Your comments about the football area of canoe was very timely for me. I'm just getting to the bilge area with my current project(Huron). I have just enough spanish cedar(dark color) for about two strips that I could use for the transition. I look forward to trying something different. Als...

I just finished putting in cheater strips to solve just the problem your describing. I could have saved myself several hours work by keeping the strips close to level towards the stems. Since I'm using cypress(uniform color), the curvature of the strips or lack thereof would have not been noticealbl...

moisture

I just purchased enough cypress to build the Huron. Actually, I have already begun stripping the hull. I was wondering about the moisture content and how I might measure it! I noticed that I could actually bent a scrap 18-20in strip into a complete circle without breaking. Also, the supplier mention...

strip length

I like the 12' lengths. I just finished stripping 16' cypress, and the extra length is hard to manage. For me storage of the longer strips is a problem in my small shop. A combination of 12' lengths and 10' lengths is economical for the shorter tandems. I have used the 45 degree scarf...it works gre...

I have used the blade Dell mentioned and the freud blade...both are excellent. Locally at my location Home Depot has the Freud blade at a very good price. If you have a low horsepower table saw, the thin kerf not only saves wood, but will have the same effect as increasing the HP. However, if your t...

To Glenn: I used plastic tubing purchased from irrigation department of home improvement store in place of the wood. I just cut the tubing to about 1/2 inch lengths and drove the nail through. I made up a few in advance before using on hull. Many of these can be used more than once. The tubing was s...
