Re: type of wood
Hi Scott Whilst I built my first boat using western red cedar that I had delivered rough sawn and then planed and thicknessed up myself I built my second boat using pre planed pine from my local builders merchant in the UK.I spent two hours selecting the best boards but I think the result was worth ...

Re: which paddle?
Hi Rabbit Are you sure you don't want to make your own paddle?I found it a really rewarding part of the build and despite having been a cabinetmaker all my life I found the book Canoe Paddles a complete guide to making your own by Graham Warren and David Gidmark (ISBN-13:978-1-55209-525-6) (ISBN-10:...

Re: Forms not lining up under string line
I agree with rabbit I think your 90 degree line must be slightly out.It could also be that your forms match each other when they are stacked on top of each other but if one or two are stacked with left and right on opposite sides( e.g they are flipped over in comparison to the others)the error may b...

Re: Squeegeeing alternative?
interesting but sounds to me like if I was doing this I would end up with bits of towel in my resin, resin and bits of towel stuck to my gloves and fingers and a whole load of trouble. I have only made two boats so far and I have to say the second one came out a lot better than my first and i put thi...

Re: how far off the molds?
Hi Rabbit I'm no expert having only built two canoes but suggest you try some ratchet straps around the offending stations and / or a few extra staples at an angle so the don't pull away from the mould so easily.I'd say 2 or three mm out is tolerable but more than that may cause problems if it is al...

Re: pics of my canoe in progress 'freedom 15'
Hi finrod I think using padauk will give you some interesting colours.I have some mini chests of drawers I made from it.The way it changes colour is fascinating. It started off really bright orange.almost luminous in its intensity! Then a few months later it darkened and darkened. After a few years i...

Re: canoe storage solution with a difference
Hi Glen
I haven't noticed much evaporation so far and just occasionally add a pint or so from the bottom of the kettle to keep it topped up.
It is great fun to use and for an extra water feature you can leave the tap open as the container rises but it can get a bit splashy!
cheers

canoe storage solution with a difference
Hi folks Just thought I'd share my canoe storage solution with you.I spent a bit of time messing around with pipes and a central heating pump and came up with this. The canoe is lowered by opening the tap and as it begins to move you close the tap as the water container rises past you to the top. I ...

Hi Sue My decks are made from a strip of elm in the centre with two stripes of sycamore either side with a couple of pieces of reclaimed mahogany either side of that.As it was reclaimed from an unwanted table top i'm not sure of the exact variety but it came up really well with the varnish. enjoy yo...
