Re: reminiscing
Great to hear from you MTPocket... I've thought about you and the wonderful work you have shared on this site. This site is better for your presence. I was fortunate enough to attend the Bear Mountain Boats Rendezvous in Westport in September before a trip to Algonquin. Definitely missed you and Gle...

You should indeed deduct half the thickness of your stem molds from station 7. I'm not sure there is a problem here however. You noted that you saw a gap between the plank and station 7 when you laid it across the forms. How big of a gap and did you lay the strip across the shaped stem (it's not sho...

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
I got my gunwales glued on this weekend. Total weight ended up being 2.90 pounds (including .42 pounds of epoxy to glue them on and just under 40 oz for the gunwales themselves (< 20 oz each) 0.75 Foam for gunwales (after rounding edges) 0.80 weight of carbon sleeve for gunwales (44 ft/lb) 0.94 Weig...

Got my gunwales fabricated and wet-out.... Once these cure, I'll install them permanently. I built them a bit larger (1" x 3/4") than the prior set. I think they look good. 1.5 pounds before epoxy (foam + carbon sleeve). https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/74592349_10157139702237...

Vinyl Foam: Divinycell 4 lb. Density - 3/8" thick https://www.fibreglast.com/product/Vinyl_Foam_4lb_Density/Vacuum_Bagging_Sandwich_Core I had used this stuff for the core (and ribs) for the first carbon/kevlar canoe I built). 2 layers built up to 3/4" by 3/4" Total weight of the gunw...

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
I will add small flotation chambers. The 3.6 oz Innegra was OK to wet-out. About like 5 oz kevlar I'd say. I use West System epoxy so it took me about 2.5 hours to get it all wet. I've been thinking I should experiment with a less viscous epoxy...

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
I put the layer of Innegra (3.6 oz) in this weekend. I put a layer of 0.2 oz carbon fiber veil over the honeycomb core to avoid filling the honeycomb with epoxy... It came out OK but still took more epoxy than I would have liked..This hull is now sitting at just under 31 pounds.. here's a pic of the...

Brian wrote: How many layers of carbon sleeve did you use? What weight sleeve ? Did you do the wet out with thickened epoxy, or did you wet out with unthickened and followup with thickened? The foam i used for my gunwales was built up from the 3/8" foam I had left over from a prior build. I built up a 3/4" X 3/4" cross section I purchased carbon fiber sleeve from soller composites: https://www.sollercomposites.com/CarbonSleeves.html I think they were 1.25" Diameter....

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
dimensions on gunwales was 3/4 X 3/4". Once they were built and the carbon fiber saturated and cured, they were easy to install with some thickened epoxy. Note that I saturated the carbon with epoxy while the gunwales were on the hull (but the hull edge covered with plastic so they would have t...

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
The epoxy won't run away if it is sufficiently thickened (I use carbosil to thicken my epoxy - I also mixed in a bit of graphite to match the color of the carbon fiber hull. And of course there is no rule that says you couldn't flip the sandwiched pair of hulls over so they are both upright while th...

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
All of the foam I have used so far was not scrim cut in either direction. the first canoe I built used a single layer of 3/8" thick foam. It was hard to shape and I did use a heat gun to get it to lay down but still needed to use the station molds to hold it in place as I described above. I bev...
