Craig, I just wanted to say that I had the same feelings when I built my first boat. All the woodworking I had done gave me experience but somehow "creating" a boat was an exceptional feeling. Thanks for you words - and hey, your Bob's looks great - do you have more pictures somewhere? Dale

Beavers, You might also consider placing a 4 to 6" wide bias cut strip of 6 oz glass over the filet for additional strength. You can do this before the filet has hardened - wet out the glass (lay it on a piece of saran wrap and brush on epoxy until the cloth is no longer visible), then transfer...

Beavers,

Nice looking paddle - good to see you putting those extra strips to use.

I see you are from Nebraska - I am too (Lincoln). I'd love to see you work sometime.

Another builder from Lincoln, NE! Hey we ought to meet up sometime. I also enjoy bluegrass - play a banjo. I'd like to see our canoe. I built a Redbird last year and I am finishing a kayak now. Unless you fill the holes with something, you will get bubbles in the glass - so you must. I've had best l...

Rick, I have used a 1/4" router for 25 years now with no few problems and have beaded and coved many a strip. It really depends on what you mean by "other items". If I were making raised panel doors with a router, I think the 1/2 would be a good investment. You can do lots of routing ...

Why have you built your own boat? My brother-in-law John encouraged me to build a canoe. I read and reread Tom Hill's Ultralight boat building, dreamed, procrastinated, dreamed and finally bought a royalex Dagger. Later I happened across Canoecraft, bought it, read it and thought "Gee that is ...

I'm another bigger fellow and would like to see a solo design large enought for a 200lb+ and gear for a week or two. I an intrigued by the design of the Freedom solo - I wouldn't mind a deeper hull. I've only paddled a Wenonah Prism on a 5 day trip but was very impressed. It's bow is 19", stern...

Duane Strosaker has made carbon fiber blades on wood shaft (wide, curve blade) and total carbon Greenland kayak paddles. His sites might give you some ideas.

Knute, It's hard to hide the Texas in ya! I grew up around Lubbock, in the southern panhandle and all my family and my wife's family still live there. Although my brother-in-law and I built our Redbird in Lincoln, the first float was in the Colorado River N. of Austin. Your canoe is very nice and ha...
