Re: Fiberglassing the stems
Hi Andy, I did a detailed description of laying down those bias strips in my last build here: https://www.canoetripping.net/forums/forum/paddlecraft-construction/105054-light-weight-solo-tripper-build/page8 It covers the bias strip cutting, area prep, application ... basically all the stuff you are ...

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
At some point I will be emailing you to get the details of the foam and tubular carbon fiber you used and the supplier ... I think that is one of the changes for the next boat I build.
Thanks

Re: Coppermine
Sometimes I forget the degree to which i over thought things when I first started building .... with the apparent scarcity of build threads for this boat and since I haven't actually built it, I can only tell you how I would tackle it, it may give you the idea of how to do it or later you may find I...

Re: Coppermine
Pretty sure that is taken care of when you apply the fiberglass layers. You are making a composite hull here and the wood bears very little of the load, that is the job of the glass and epoxy layers.

Hey Randy, most of the image links for your last build don't seem to be working, any chance you could take a peak?

Re: Seat reconfig questions
It really depends on the type of user you are ... do you care about weight? And a pic or 2 would help a lot so we can see what you are dealing with. I moved into the cleat camp a couple of builds ago, I think it looks cleaner and gives a stronger platform. Most of the way down this page on my last b...

Re: Glassing the stem
If you follow the directions in the link I posted, you will see I only do a thin final coat on the actual bias strip area, after it gets feathered and sanded. There is no need to recoat the entire hull, having said that, once I sand down the hull, IF I have any areas where I get too close to the gla...

Re: Glassing the stem
Just a note on hanging your canoe .... I read an article about rodents chewing rope and that you should use light chains or some other rodent proof material. This is just a thought, after I posted this is another forum, one of the guys there has his canoe drop because he had mice and they found a wa...

Re: Glassing the stem
Putting epoxy over cured epoxy is fine as long as you sand to prep, that gives the epoxy something to hang onto. If you put epoxy on epoxy within the manufacturers spec, you get a full chemical bond .... think of it as a single piece of epoxy, so strength is max. If you sand cured epoxy, the scratch...

Re: Glassing the stem
I don't use brass pieces on the stems, but Yes I would definitely glass the ends. I would sand the stems flat to receive the brass bands, then I would go ahead and bias glass the stem area. Once that is filled and cured, resand the end area flat to receive the bands ... you are sure the end is seale...

Re: 16" Prospector Station 7 & Stem Issue
Personally, I would work on option 1 .... you know now what you did, so adjusting the stem, 6 and 7 molds should be straight forward. You will never notice a 1/2" trim job on the canoe IMO. When you do your "adjustments" just be sure to take strip and check the fair carefully, the fro...

Re: 16" Prospector Station 7 & Stem Issue
When I lofted my Freedom 17, I took off stem thickness from the stem forms asince I was using stems. However, my understanding was that there was no need to account for the strip thickness on the rest of the forms, that was already assumed to 1/4" ... that may just be my version of CC, but I wa...

Re: Redbird Forms Problem
Personally, at 7 strips in, I would just restart and salvage what you can .... fix the forms, check the fairness before restarting. If the form is out the strips will never settle down and you will always see that deformity. With a little luck you can save the stems, if you separate the strips caref...

Re: Widest strip that can be used
Hi Eric, I believe that is meant as a warning for long term immersion, not the relatively short immersion for a canoe. For normal usage, you will be paddling for hours, then the canoe is removed from the water. If you have a craft which will be sitting, in the water, for months, this is not the varn...
