Don't forget the hours of enjoyment you spend browsing this and other websites looking for great ideas.... :laughing We lost track of the effort for building our Redbird. It's been "lots". I would guess that a 2nd canoe would go much faster (maybe 40% faster). Now that we've spent so much ...

Experience with Autobody Clearcoat

Hopefully we will be ready for varnish in about a month. I've read a couple instances where people have had their canoes' clearcoated at a local body shop. We were thinking that with the investment of time we have put into our canoe so far, a really nice finish would be appropriate. A really nice fi...

We're about on the same schedule ast It's Me with our Redbird. Decks went on last Friday night. Seats waiting on Cane. Outwales ready to go on any day now. Still haven't sanded the hull yet (in or out). Would like to finish this month but doubtful. Maybe June

We used a photocopy shop (kinko's) to make a copy of the original form layouts. There was no perceptible difference between the copy and the original that I could see (and all the forms were distorted by the same % if there was any distortion) given they were all copied at once. All the forms are dr...

Has anyone tried simply using dowels and epoxy to hang their seats (in place of bolts)? I understand that removal of the seats would require some drilling or cutting to get them out. I was thinking of drilling holes in the gunwales, making the top portion of the hole a bit wider and putting a small ...

We did scupper the inwales. We started with a 3/4" x 7/8" piece of cherry and cut the scuppers out of it with a router. The scuppers are beveled so they look a bit like funnels (wider on the bottom and narrower on the top). 9 pieces on the deck sounds more complicated than it really is. So...

We're still sneaking up on our Redbird. Inwales are installed. Outwales bent and waiting. Put the finishing touches on our decks tonight (they've taken a month to build - 9 pieces each). Should have them installed later this week. Still haven't sanded the inside or outside of the hull. Seat frames a...

AH! So it IS the Bassbug Redbird after all! Patrick saw the post and said that's gotta be Bassbugs Redbird. I said "Naw, Bassbug has extra thwarts on his Redbird". Looks like you took them off. Did you notice any difference in stability with them on vs off? Fantastic looking canoe!

I think it depends on the canoe design you are building and how wide you leave the leading edge of your inner stem. I guess 3/16" thick strips would allow for narrower stems too. We are building a Redbird. We built both inner and outer stems out of 3/4" wide stock and it worked out fine. N...

I'm less worried about keeping clamps in place (plan to use draggon's teeth) but was pondering keeping the deck itself in place. It appears that it will have a tendency to slide out as the hull is squeezed in from the sides. I guess a block of wood clamped to the hull just behind the deck (on each s...

I was just going to epoxy the decks in place. so if that is all that matters i may as well go ahead with outwales. We're getting close to putting out decks in. As we shaped them to fit, it became clear that holding them in place when "lubricated" with epoxy will make them pretty slippery....
