Preventing runs

Adam - I know that the following will not be of any help after the epoxy cures, but it may be useful for your next boat. The best way to deal with sags and runs on the inside epoxy coats is to prevent them in the first place. When you apply a coat of epoxy, don’t walk away as soon as you are done. S...

The red cedar guideboat shown here was painted on the outside only, after the last epoxy fill coat was cured and sanded. The paint was Interlux Brightside single part polyurethane. I checked with the manufacturer about epoxy compatibility before painting. The initial coats were brushed on, but sandi...

Scarfing sled for strips and gunwales

Since I scarf all strips and gunwales when building an Adirondack guideboat, I needed a sled that was accurate, safe to operate on a table saw, and quick to load and unload. The attached pictures show what I have come up with. I have been meaning to put it up on my web site, but so far have only add...

Hi Mark – Congratulations on starting an Adirondack guideboat. Mike Olivette, our publisher Nick Burns, and myself wish you success in the project, and we are very interested in following your progress. There are very few minor changes that we would make in the book, but there is one that is a bit m...

The Bob’s can be built at 15, 16, and 17 feet. I have a 15-footer that I have never tried, a 16-foot student project just finishing up, and a 17-footer I built 6 or 7 years ago. The 17 is called a JennyB, named for the daughter of the builder who first built it. The JennyB is simply built with an ex...

I never bother to precoat, saving a coat of epoxy and the time required to do it. As for filling the gaps, see my web site, http://michneboat.com. Scroll down to the bottom of the opening page and click on My Web Site. Then click Builder’s Corner, and scroll down to Filling the Cracks. Reducing the ...

Skimping on glue between strips may reduce sanding effort; it may also contribute to later more serious problems. Given the twist and bending that strips must undergo when building a canoe, and considering the vagaries of strip reaction due to varying grain structure, it is safe to say that there wi...

I've used a 35,000 BTU salamander-style kerosene heater for years with no problems attributable to using it. My shop is normally heated by the house furnace, but because the shop is the in-house garage, it can get quite cool if the outside temperature is in the teens (F). I run the heater for about ...

Dave - If you use slotted screws, you may have trouble with cam-out when you try to remove them. To help prevent it, wax the screws before you drive them. If you can, get some square drive screws, which are much less likely to cause the problem

Hi Dave – I just finished mounting outwales on a Bob’s Special. I mounted the outwales dry using square drive screws, then removed them and glued them back on with thickened epoxy, driving the screws back in until the epoxy cured. By first mounting them dry, you cut the screw threads and have everyt...
