beautiful

I really like the accent strip, which shows only partly at the tips.
Beatiful boat !
I'm sure you 're going to paddle it for a while and will decide to build another cedar-strip canoe or kayak.
That's what our hobby is all about: passion for woodworking combined with enjoying the result of it.

I used a PU-varnish clear coat (with UV-filter) on my first stripper as well. Only I applied it with a brush, back in november 2003. Too cold it seemed, because the PU-coat didn't really smoothen 100%. Maybe spraying on gives better results ? But, the coat is completely clear, and very tough (strong...

I agree, the surface that will be varnished has to be perfectly smooth.

I'm doing a Winisk as well, and was thinking about lighter gunwales as well.
So, I'd be thankfull if you did post some pics and share us your experiences.

I was thinking of laminating ash and cedar for the seats and thwarts as well.
Would that be an option ?

Go ahead Dean.
For what it is worth: for glueing the strips, I 'm just using the simplest white carpenter's glue I can find. Nothing waterproff, because the glue won't touch any water (I hope).

I finally got started.

I finally started work on the Wiisk canoe. Compared to my first stripper, I changed a few things: a) I will be using inner and outer stems now, and b) I also routed the strips into bead & cove. I prepared poplar, SAP wood, walnut and purple heart strips, but don't know yet if I'm going to use th...

I used a sabot in the tips of my 38 Special canoe, and now -on the Winisk- I 've installed an inner stem. I was wondering how I will now the exact location where to cut off the ends of the strips, exactly there where I should install the outer stem ?

Hi Scott, A paddle is the most important thing in a canoe. The size has to be right, compared with your height, and depending on the water you paddle in. The grip has to fit your handpalm. That's why I ended up with making canoepaddles myself. I also tried out my woodskills on those paddles before I...
