Hi Mack; it's been awhile since I built my canoe. I trimed the sheer line before fiberglass, one reason is that when it comes time to pull the forms, the less wood on the forms the better. Dave, I have used Redwood on 2 kayaks now and have had no problems with it being brittle. I have become fond out the dark color. I have used cedar and pine for a contrasting color both look good. Here's a pic:

mbmike, the marks do come out with light sanding then another coat of varnish. I will have to do that anyway in about another month because I will be entering it in the county fair. I do know of people that have tried their boat out with just epoxy on it. Of course the sun would be a big thing to consider. Varnish will take 3 to 5 days to cure, I let mine varnish cure for a week and when I strapped it done on my truck it left marks where the straps were. I don't know how much s...
