Trimming Glass at stems?

Hey all, Just finished glassing the hull of my canoe!! Looks pretty good I think. I am just wondering when it comes to trimming the glass at the stems, the book says to trim flush and then sand with 220. I'm just wondering if I am suppose to lay a strip of glass vertically along the stem?? as it sit...

Fairing Compound.

Hey everyone, I'm back looking for more answers. My outer stems are glued and shaped and everything looks really good, well except for a few minor areas. I have some small areas that need to be filled with fairing compound around where the stem meets the hull. My question is if I should be mixing sa...

Re: Sheerline and glassing

Hey Grumple, I haven't started glassing yet, but when I started stripping mine my first strip was lined up with the shearline at the center station and continued that way until about station 4.5 where the shearline started curving. I guess what I'm saying is... are you sure you need to trim your she...

Re: Sourcing Cedar

Hey Pit Boss Mike, I had the same issue looking for clear WRC in my area (East central Alberta). I called about 15 Lumber yards in a 200km radius looking for some 16' WRC until one of the yards told me about a place that stocks it. My only suggestion is call around and actually talk to people and as...

Re: Trimming at shear line Tips

Thanks for the input. It is a symmetrical boat the Hiawatha. I will cut shy of the line by about 1/2" and then glass and trim after glassing. I still need to work on mortising the outer stem... that is my next hurdle. Thanks for all the help so far. Everyone has been really helpful. More pictur...

Trimming at shear line Tips

I have all of my strips on and Westsystem and fibreglass on order! I have been looking at the canoe for a few days hesitant to make the first cut haha. I need to cut at the shearline and don't want any major mess ups at this point.. I have made a template that uses a fair curve connection each stati...

Re: mitering second half of football Tips

Ya, I read that in canoecraft as well. I was just wondering if anyone has done it before with successful results. Its not that the miters are horrible or anything, just if i could cover them it would be better. I think i will just flush the outer stem with the inner stem and call it a project. There...
