Re: mitering second half of football Tips
Thanks Alick. I have done a few trial cuts and was not pleased with the results. I am still working over the stem where there are compound curves and it is proving very difficult. Another question I have is about outer stem length. Would i guy be able to extent the outer stem a inch or so past the 6...

Re: Shaping Stems. Need Guidence
Thanks for the pictures Brian. You have not muddied any waters, if anything you have cleared the waters. I have finished shaping the stems to receive the first strips and will shape as I go ( once I finish bead and cove on all my strips..) I like seeing the method of mortising for the outer stem I w...

Re: Shaping Stems. Need Guidence
It is hard to argue with Ron Swanson, if Ron says to go with a 1/16th on either side of center line then that is what I will continue to do. I was worried about mortising for the outer stem but that worry has been put to bed. I will continue shaping tomorrow. Thanks for all your input I will keep ev...

Re: Shaping Stems. Need Guidence
Thanks Cruiser,
I must of misunderstood the book. I will relaminate a stem and start from scratch. The illustration on page 117 of the seventh printing is where I got my information from. I'm just glad I didn't go further. Thanks for your speedy responses they are much appreciated.

Re: Shaping Stems. Need Guidence
That was my thinking after I stopped to think about what was happening. I don't mind making new stems and doing the job right. My only question is that in Canoecraft on the section on shaping the stems it talks about shaping a 1/8 leading edge and fairing to that line. When you make a 1/8 edge you h...

Shaping Stems. Need Guidence
Hey Everyone, I am currently attempting to shape my inner stems and have some questions. I feel like i have over shaped my stems and removed to much thickness from the inside of the inner stem. I started at 7/8 and am now at just over 1/2. Have I removed to much. I have also veered over my leading e...

Re: 15' 0" Hiawatha
Thanks Stephen, Ya, I went back and read CanoeCraft again and found the paragraph about stem lamination. I have my Stems sitting on the workbench with the WRC inner stems drying out. I did run into a problem where my stem mold was warped and if I followed the mold stems then my lams would come out w...

Re: Picking Planks
Cruiser, Thanks for the advice.. I may go to the yard tomorrow and ask if I can go through any cedar length they may have laying around. If I am lucky enough to stumble upon some clear cedar boards then BONUS, if not I will resort to HD and go through their pallets. As per your advice I have added m...

Re: Picking Planks
Looking for advice on buying cedar locally to mill my own strips. My options are limited and am left to either rummage through the 16' 5/4 pile of WRC from Home Depot, or order WRC from local hardwood dealer. If I choose to order through hardwood dealer I cannot get full length strips and cost and d...

Re: 15' 0" Hiawatha
Thanks for the reply P'sD. I have removed them and clamped them to my vise and will do the bending from there it seems like it will be much easier. My strongback is a 16' footer, and your right about the stems being easier to trim cut to length after glue up then trying to mess around with getting i...
