Do I smell a 1st of April post? In their photos the alignment is horrible. Their photoshop people need a little more practice. It's their annual April tool line. I really like the full round spoke shave they introduced last spring. http://pawistik.blogspot.com/2008/04/cool-new-tool.html I''m just a...

New Tool from Lee Valley

FYI, (Please forgive any redundancy, I also posted this over in the MyCCR Boatbuilding forum ) Lee Valley has introduced it's newest contribution to woodworking technology this morning: http://www.leevalley.com/images/item/Woodworking/Saws/variable_gangsaw1b.jpg It's the Veritas Variable Gang Saw . ...

Wow, harsh! :frightened Angle iron (or rebar, etc.) is just about the worst thing you can encounter, especially if it's at the wrong angle. Do you mean 3 & 2 coats of epoxy or 3 & 2 layers of fiberglass? If it's one layer of 6 ounce each side, then I'd be inclined to go for the extra protect...

Hi, I'll offer my 2 cents as a relatively novice builder. If it's a kayak you prefer, build the kayak. That's the easy question, WHICH kayak, now that's a bit tougher but it can be fun making the decision. My first boat was strip-built and I don't regret that. However, it did take a fair bit of time...

I did not stain a boat but I did use Aniline Dye.... The instructions said to mix it with water or alcohol. I chose water. You could have had a real nice "whiskey" coloured boat if you had gone the alcohol route. How about dark rum, or perhaps red wine, in which case I suppose you could s...

I had a few full length strips in my kayak, but there were a lot that were less than full length. I did scarf together a few (I used an 8:1 ratio, I think) ahead of time for the curved portions, but most were simply butt joints done in place. Having more full-length strips will make things a bit sim...

Why a keel? If your design is good, why would it be needed? So, where are you WDO?

Second question is why? I can't imagine the epoxy/graphite coating staying on through actual use for very long. Or is this stuff tougher than I give it credit for?

A little too far away for me, but I keep trying to send my cousin-in-law in my stead. She has lived in Madison for school for the last four years or so & I'm dismayed that she has not yet sent me a report on Canoecopia.

By the way, going through my blog I found a bit more about my bubble experiences inside the hull. ...in the hull I also had bubbles forming from air coming out of the wood itself. I had heated the shop to 20C overnight and things were a nice steady temperature by the morning and the heat was turned ...

Hi There, The shape & size of the recess are determined by the shape of the boat and the depth and profile of the recess. It seems common to slope the recess from the peak of the foredeck just in front of the cockpit rim to a low point at about your hips or the seat, then curving back up to the ...
