Varnish

Thanks Bill. I`ll go along with that. I want to get it finished before I go to Toronto this year and hopefully get up to Rice lake for a spot of canoeing and fishing. Also Peterborough is quite close and I`ll get to see the canoe museum again.
So thanks again Bill.

Varnish

When applying varnish to the new canoe is it OK to apply straight from the tin or should it be thinned with a suitable thinner and 3-4 coats applied? Thanks folks. I have`nt been around for a while but my canoe is now at the final stage (almost).
Thanks again.

Glen, Thank you so much for your reply. Yes, I have`nt been on the forum for some time. I must admit I lost a bit of entuisiam(?) to continue with the canoe. Thankfully the drive and ambition has returned and I want to get my "Abenaki" on the water this spring. So I`m off today to sand dow...

blush

Hi folks, I have a problem with "blush" that I tried to eradicate in various ways from washing with amonia based water to sanding. However even though I appear to get rid of the blush in places after sanding, left alone for a day or so and the blush reappears even on places I have sanded w...

Thanks Glen. I`ll do just as you say. On another topic, where in Peterborough is the shop. I`m coming over to Canada end of July, and spending some time in Algonquin. My twin brother has a trailer at Rice lake, not far from Peterborough, and I thought it might be a good idea to call in.Must have bee...

Wash

After applying the final (I hope) layer of epoxy to the interior of my canoe what appeared to be "blush" appeared on the surface of the epoxy after a day or so. I washed it down with warm water fortafied with amonia and the end result is a bit scary. A white deposit has now appeared on the...

I had a similar problem. The weave showed through as a white patch. I got good advice in completely different directions,ie let it be and live with it / sand it down etc. Well I sanded it down, repatched and built up the epoxy.Looks good now. Have a look at the pics and see if your problem is similar...

Inwale instilation

Ed, have you any photos of your Abenaki. Is it finished and how does it handle in respect to other canoes you may have paddled before the Abenaki.

Inwale Instilation

Thanks all of you. Well the wood I am using for the gunwales is ash.Ed, I like the little touch with the pieces ofwood used to support the inwales near the stems.Think I`ll use this method too. I`m a bit daunted at the thought of steam bending.I`ll have to find a17` tube to use as a steam chamber. B...

Install Inwales

My Abenaki canoe is 16ft end to end. Taking the curvature of the hull and the upsweep at either end into consideration, the inwales are 16ft 2.5in. So without steaming the inwales has anyone any advice as to how I can possibly "BEND" the inwales into place on the sheerline of my canoe? Tha...
