Re: Rob Roy

I haven't built a Rob Roy but I think I have seen them with a seat that is fixed directly to the bottom of the hull with blocks.

Re: Peel Ply

Hi jim If by peel ply you mean stuff that you roll on and remove at wet out stage I did read a post about someone using blue paper towel to achieve the same (a nice neat wet out with excess removed without having to squeegy) and it looked good but when i tried it I quickly ran into problems with the...

Re: Building Two at a time

Hi Folks I have just completed two boats together and was surprised by the amount of time I saved. These two are 15ft long as they are for a restaurant (to hang up for decoration!).I still made them good enough to use.Put three coats of resin inside and out on one.and just filled the weave only on th...

can these old hand cleaner containers be used with resin?

Hi Folks Part question part tip as I haven't done it yet, but I am just thinking these old hand cleaner containers might make good resin dispensers. :thinking http://i.imgur.com/kwbYFItl.jpg I realize they need to be well rinsed and dried and they would also dispense the same amount per stroke so I ...

Re: Inwale Install??!

Hi Jesse I always use Ash for my gunwales and haven't had any problems and bend them without steaming or soaking. If you are using Oak I would be sure to make sure it is well soaked or steamed for about an hour (I agree with Randy there!) I also taper my inwales which I believe makes the bending eas...

A small adjustment to my stapler.

Hi Folks I have used a variety of staplers over the years electric,Cordless and corded and a pin gun.My latest is a manual sprung one from stanley. It was working fine with a bit of tape on the area where the staples come out ( to stop the plunger making a dent) but it kept sticking and got gummed up...

Re: Have you ever built a canoe for a restaurant?

Hi Jim Thank you, nice boat too.I like the accent stripe. Yes I still feel I want to make them seaworthy just in case one day someone is tempted to try them out.I will see if I can find a RAKA supplier who has 4oz ,60inch cloth in the UK. As far as I know so far there is only one supplier of 6oz 60 i...

Have you ever built a canoe for a restaurant?

Hi Folks Once again I have been commissioned to make a canoe for a restaurant. In fact I have been asked to make two! They will not be going in the water and I am told once they are hung up in the room they will not be removed as this will require the removal of a window. One will be hung upright the...

Re: The Nate Stick

Hi Jim I don't normally get back ache just the odd bit of cramp from staying in one position for too long and I usually switch from seat to kneeling thwart or vice versa to cure it but I will log your idea in the back of my mind and give it a go next time I am out. I recently lowered my thwart brack...

Re: Mouldy marks on my decks at one end.

Hi Folks Here is an update on this one.Today I started work on the mould marks. I began by trying to sand them off.Very little happened as I confirmed my suspicion that they are indeed under the varnish. http://i.imgur.com/974oQVul.jpg Next I scraped off the varnish and sanded again. They were still...

Re: Carpenter's glue/Titbond question

Hi Folks I think a lot of confusion arises on the subject of cleaning off glue because some glues are easier to clean off when wet and others are easier to clean off when set. Titebond original cleans off easily when wet by wiping excess off and also is fairly hard and powdery when set so cleans off...

Re: Mouldy marks on my decks at one end.

Hi Jim Thank you for your reply.I will try something when I have my yearly end of season refurb.Haven't heard of this on Ash specifically but it does seem to be true as it isn't on the walnut! If it won't sand I might bleach it out but was hoping to avoid stripping the coating if possible after all t...

Mouldy marks on my decks at one end.

Hi folks I seem to have some mould or mildew developing on my decks at one end of my boat.It is on one end only and this is the end I usually rest on the grass when I prepare to portage my boat on my shoulders. http://i.imgur.com/3qt5bNUl.jpg Oddly the spots seems to be under the varnish :thinking 1...

Re: Seat Positions

Hi Pete. I haven't made a Ranger my boats are mostly Peterborough's but I find with seats hanging on 150mm bolts at the end of the bolts it gives you the option to easily cut the pillars above them down if you decide they need to be higher. You can also put the pillar offcut back on the bolt under yo...
