Nice Brian.
Anxious to see how your Mix stands up to actual use.
I've always been curious what Bending Branches use ? It holds up very well, in the paddles I've used.

Re: New Composite Paddles for 2020
Nice work with the power planer ! A tool you might be interested in is a Dewalt DWE 6401DS, variable speed disc sander. We have two at the Wood shop. My Oldest son, who just finished his log sided home, put me on to them. With a 40 grit pad, you can hog off wood like a Beaver. The Variable speed mak...

Re: New Composite Paddles for 2020
I almost forgot !
Nice Sled set up for the Radial arm saw. I bought a Craftsman 10" Radial saw, New in the early Seventies. Pre Carbide blade days ! I was never comfortable with it ! Had I made a sled like yours ? I might have kept it !
Thanks again !

Re: New Composite Paddles for 2020
Great work Brian ! Seems like I said that before, somewhere else ! :wink For the record, I'm adopting your Strongback set up, for hold planks, while cutting strips ! No Hot melt glue, no little nails here and there, that I might cut into ! If I ever get into making paddles, I'll refer to your excell...

If I visualize it correctly ? Yes.
It should end when you get to the Football.
A picture would tell better !

I've cut strips as thin as 1/8" with the Skilsaw. For the Inserts on my Composites. They came out very uniform, and no planing required. I didn't bother bead and coving, as there is no need, for that thin of a strip.. https://hosting.photobucket.com/albums/y390/JimDodd/.highres/IMG_2631_zpsx1d9...

Sanding ! I love a ROS sander, but it leaves swirl marks. I always hand sand with the grain, using 120grit..
I don't know how many times I've thought I did a great job sanding, then those pesky swirl marks show up !
Yeah it's hard to wait the Winter out to finish a build !
Good Luck !

Re: 17' 9" Freedom
Good lay up plan. S-glass is more expensive, but a great option with a thin stripped hull !
That is what I'd go with. I'm more about durability.

Thinking outside the box ! This is a simple trick, zip tying a small piece of 1/4" plastic tubing. https://hosting.photobucket.com/albums/y390/JimDodd/.highres/IMG_2329_zpsx1fo8gl7.jpg https://hosting.photobucket.com/albums/y390/JimDodd/.highres/IMG_2325_zpszsmaxyny.jpg https://hosting.photobuc...

Re: Lofting woes
I traced plans onto poster board, using carbon paper with no problems. That saved the plans, and the poster board was easy to trace around onto plywood forms. I agree using a poster board Batten would be too flexible, to mark. An 1/8" thick strip of Ash, would be fine. Usually I just use my eye...

Re: Fiberglass Creases, Wrinkles, Bubbles, oh my!
I've resorted to a lot of things, scraping the INSIDE of a hull ! Old butcher knives, ground down big grade 8 flat washers, and of course for small spots, a Swiss Army pocket knife, that is always in my pocket ! Point is look around or make something that works for you, and share it here ! Those scr...

Re: staining ash
If you used an Oil based stain, I'd be leary.
It might work, if you were just coating the Ash, but adding cloth, I'd pass.
An Alcohol, or water base stain might be a better choice.
Having made that statement, I've never stained Ash trim.

Re: Widest strip that can be used
I'm a first time builder. I've purchased WRC rough boards that are a full 1 1/8" x 6". I see that the common size is 3/4" thick. Can I plane to 1" and cut strips 1/4"x 1" realizing that they will end at 7/8" for build? Hate to waste good lumber. I too, hate to was...
