Re: which paddle?
alick: the canoe build is kinda about all the building i wanna do. having said that, the excess material for the trim..... http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y35/colective/Canoe%20Build/trim_timber.jpg could be used for the blades and the hull material that didn't meet my requirements could be used to...

the dvd that acts as a companion to the book is also very helpful, since you get to see the process in action.

Re: Forms not lining up under string line
have you checked that the face of the station that mates to the strongback is at 90 degrees to the centre line? i had my stations cnc machined but still found that some of them were out by a hair. 3/16 sounds like a lot, at least to me, but i'm only on my first build.

which paddle?
being optimistic that the bob's special i'm in the middle of building isn't going to sink like a stone, i've started to look at paddles. i'm not really up to making my own, and the only wooden paddles i can get here are made by grey owl. so... what to get for solo paddling. there is quite a range, b...

Re: Trim lumber
hehe yeh... when i change to my region, it doesn't give a shipping price, but my guess is 3 times the price of the timber :razz
i'll just have to stick to niangon and new guinea rosewood i guess, but that maple would look great for the deck/breast hooks

Re: how far off the molds?
thanx for the suggestions alick :smile i'm using a stapless system, so extra staples kinda defeats the purpose (hence the blocks tacked to the inside... as per glen's suggestion in tc's topic). it's no more than a mm off the molds. the strips are supported against the molds by flat bungee chords ......

how far off the molds?
welp, i've made it as far as the first 13 strips either side, and i have noticed that the strips arn't tight against a couple of the stations. how far can they pull away from the station molds before you need to resort to tacking blocks to the inside and screwing to the stations? any ideas would be ...

Re: pics of my canoe in progress 'freedom 15'
i had similar problems with my outer stems, which are 2 strips of spotted gum and 1 strip of merbau. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y35/colective/Canoe%20Build/bent_stems.jpg my first attempt the outer merbau snapped. like patrick's dad suggested, the solution was to presoak overnight and i used a...

Re: Finaly started Bob's
well it's been an adventure trying to source tools and materials downunder. jay morrison in his "light but strong" article claimed "In my observation, there tends to be two distinct types of people who build wooden canoes – paddlers and woodworkers. ". i must be "special&quo...

Finaly started Bob's
after sitting on the plans for a bob's special for the best part of 6 years, i decided to do something about it instead of staring at the paper taped to the back of my door...... so i built the strongback. that kinda sat under the decking of the back patio for another year.... :rolling eyes some mon...

Re: Tiger Maple
maybe you can buy it as a laminate and finish off gunwales from a more manageable (and possibly lighter) timber with the laminate?
