Re: Freedom Solo 15' 3" or 16' 2"

wow cruiser, based on that video i'd say the freedom makes my bob's seem kinda lumbering. it certainly looks a lot more nimble. :thinking

Re: Titebond 3

having used both of those titebonds in my build, and finding they both work well, the one crucial piece of advice i can pass on is to take the time to make sure that you wipe the excess glue off, particularly on the inside, and pay attention to the sides of the station moulds. both are a pain to san...

Re: Titebond 3

i used both titebond i and titebond iii on my build. i knew that titebond i would be more than adequate for the job, it was more a case of colour. titebond i was a closer match to the paulownia, and titebond iii was a better match for the red cedar. i found that having the longer dry time could be u...

Re: splinters - the final chapter

IT'S A BOAT!!!!!!!!! :dancing we had some good weather after a week of rain, i had all my ropes sorted and new padding on the roof racks. off to the lake i went for it's first look at water. it didn't come flying off the roof and get run over by a semi. :applause i had all my stuff ready, or so i th...

splinters - the final chapter

when i first started my build, i thought it would only take a few months to complete it. canoe craft and the "build a boat" bob's special article made it seem like it would be so easy. yeh, well <insert raspberry smiley here>. i started building the stems mid 2011. now it's finally done! :...

Re: spraying water based polyurethane

Years ago I saw a rub on polyurethane finish, that a Canadian was using, we couldn't get it in the states. Something about a cancer causing ingredient, if my memory serves me. Jim yeh, getting back to the topic of the thread, ie "spraying", i checked the spec sheet for that product, glen....

spraying water based polyurethane

originally when i started my build, i planned on finishing it off with 2k automotive clear coat. that's what i'm most familiar with. two downsides to this are a) the time it takes to touch dry means that when spraying outside the chances of bugs or other things settling on the surface is increased, ...

Re: Building the Mattawa - a small tandem canoe

Really nice boat. We looked at the Bob's, how do you like it? How much did it end up weighing? i still need to put the final coats of clear on the outer hull so i have no idea how it handles. as for weight, i'm guessing a kg or two heavier than the mattawa. the strips, inner and outer stems glassed...

Re: what else do i need?

thanx guys :) jim: no crocs where i am, but once i get a feel for the boat and a bit of confidence i'll be using it for what i built it for... fishing in the estuaries both salt and fresh water reaches. yeh.. no crocs, but bull sharks :tu as for the place for my first paddle , whilst my entry point ...

Re: Building the Mattawa - a small tandem canoe

nice looking boat! reading the build page, the requirements your gf had were the same as mine, with the addition that i wanted to fish out of it. my answer was the bobs special. the width issue was less of a problem because, being symmetrical, sitting in the front seat facing backward meant it was n...

what else do i need?

welp, i need to scrape the drips (long story), sand the outer hull and throw on another couple of coats of clear then splinters will be ready for the water. i have my pfd, whistle, spare paddle, bailer, throw bag, first aid kit and water bottle. i'm planning on putting some closed cell foam mat on t...

Re: Scratches

If you have a soldering iron you can use that instead of a clothes iron so you will be able to concentrate the heat to just the scratches. a word of warning. be careful with a soldering iron. whilst it can be a precise tool for applying heat , if you linger in one spot for too long you will scorch ...

look after your timber!

not all of us are lucky enough to have a place indoors to store our timber. luckily for me i do at least have a place that's under cover. all of my strips and any timber that's already been cut into pieces narrow enough to fit into a 90mm pvc drain pipe tube gets put in those with screw caps to prot...

Re: I need a little insight.please.

in terms of a fairly easy build you might want to consider the bob's special. i'm no wood worker, but i think the fact that it has fairly gentle lines means there's no severe twisting or shaping to deal with. my original intent was for a boat i could fish from and handle solo. i'm not sure what the ...
