Hi Mike

I took a few pictures today at the museum that you might find of interest. One of the Royal Canoes is a Cedar Rib Canoe given to the Queen in 1948 I believe and that is the one I took several shots of today.

non yellowing varnish

Perhaps a water based finish is what you are looking for. I have done white pine and red pine coffee tables in water based finishes and they stay pretty clear. The pine itself does amber a bit under the finish tho

kayak

Mike Are you going to incorporate the collapsible drop down centre board Glen shows us as well :laughing The canoe used to be displayed at a higher level and the centre board was dropped down to its full extension then. It was very striking. Most people do not even see the centre board now. Denis PS...

face grain and hand tools

I would suggest being very careful using any edged tools like planes or spokeshaves with face grain planking. I usually have at least one or two pieces in my craft and have found that it gouges (for lack of a better word) (sounds better than "it rips out chunks") very easily. You have to w...

3rd coat epoxy

The third coat needs to be put on thick by brush if you only intend to put on one 3rd coat and not a 4th. of West system epoxy. It then needs to be brushed out ///////// then \\\\\\\\\\\ then horizontally with the brush almost laying flat. No need for a dry brush and it should be done right after th...

butternut for strips

I checked with a retired canoe builder over the Holidays and he tells me that he has seen one canoe built with butternut planking. He claims it was a very light canoe built in the traditional cedarstrip construction of the day. Sounds like it would be more than suitable for a boat. Best of luck Deni...

crack filling

If I may offer a suggestion with regards to crack filling. I would suggest using masking tape on each side of area to be filled and peel it off when filling is done. It will make your cleanup much faster and less chance of missing a bit of overfill on the planking that you may not notice until you a...

project

I would suggest setting up your strongback on sawhorses and fastening it to them. When you are ready to move unscrew them and reattach outside. If you are using staples I do not think you will need any additional bracing other than perhaps to fasten the first plank to the molds with small screws. If...

Progress to date

Well I have the hull and deck interior glassed and just brought it home today. Trimmed off the overhang on the deck almost flush with hull. I likely will put it away now for the winter and start back up again in the spring. Perhaps we will still get Indian Summer and I will have a chance to work on ...

Progress to date

Thursday Oct 26 2006 Brought the deck out of the basement today and reattached to hull. Weather is not co-operating and I will be moving to a heated shop to finish the interior. I was counting on Indian Summer for a week or so to do the interior at home but that does not appear to be happening. Only...

Atlantic white cedar

It would appear that atlantic white cedar is a different species than Eastern white cedar (different latin names anyway) but very similar in growing sites and characteristics and seems to be an acceptable species for boat building. I googled and got several pages of results. The following link may b...

yakima racks

I use the yakima rack system with my venture van. I load the kayaks from the rear of the van using the roller system to advance the boat to the saddles. To clarify that I mean I lift the boat over my head and walk it forward till it meets the roller system then I roll it forward. It would be nice if...

October Progress

Friday Oct 6 2006 Got the final (?) sanding done this afternoon. Saturday Oct 7 2006 A few spots opened up and a board splintered on me in two places from cracks I didn't notice. Mixed up some epoxy and sanding dust , taped the cracks and filled them in. Removed the tape shortly afterwards. Sunday O...
