cedar strips may be too thin

:crying :sad My bear mtn 15' prospector is ready to precoat and apply FG. I just finished raising the grain and sanding with #100 paper (by hand) and I noticed a number of small areas that are very thin indeed :rolling eyes I started out with 3/16" planks, trying to conserve weight. I have read...

THANKS

:eyebrows THANKS for the input.fellows. I will stick to the FG and forget the Kelvar.
After all the work of getting to a really nice natural finish I am not going to goof it up
with a material that will hide that great looking cedar strip finish. Just an idea. :razz :big grin

Fiberglass plus Kelvar

:thinking :embarassed In laying up the fiberglass on my 15' prospector could I add a strip of Kelvar on the stems and keel for extra protection :rolling eyes ?? The Kelvar is a yellow color, will it blend in with the glass to provide a nice clear finish on the hull ??? What are the pros and cons :ap...

Fiberglass selection

:confused I could use a little feedback from builders. I am in the process of sanding the hull of my 15' Ranger/Prspector and trying to make up my mind what weight fiberglass cloth to use. I was looking at using 5 oz RAKA inside and outside. Now, I am told that RAKA no longer has 5 oz. So my questio...

dry joint

:embarassed Yes, it is a dry joint and it springs back into place when seperated. In fact the way I found them was to exert a little presure on one side and I noticed some movement of the wood plank on the opposite side of the dry joint. I started looking for more then, but I discovered no more. The...

How's about a little advice on planking

:thinking :frightened I am about 3/4 of the way thru fairing the hull of my 15' Ranger/ Prospector and I have noticed several places where two planks are not glued or have seperated. These areas are approx 10" long and only effect the two adjacent planks (I hope). They are both approx one foot ...

Your thought on cutting a hole in the surface of the strongb

 :P :D I am a novice building my first canoe also, so I hesitate to give advice. But, I will tell you what I did. I found my proposed canoe and strongback in the same situation that you have. I did cut a hole in the top of the strongback to allow the ends of the canoe (15' Ranger- Prospector) ...

Clamps-CHEAP

So their I was at home depot today in the tool dept. I am looking at clamps and about to place several in my cart (I am almost finished planking so I really do not need any more, but, what the heck, why not). As my eye wandered I saw a bin of 2" spring clamps and they were marked $1.00 each, UN...

Plank repair, stem installation

 :( Well, here I am with only two planks remaining to close up the bottom. This is going to be a demanding effort. Luckyly it looks like two planks with no long and narror (REALLY NARROR) piece to fit in. So I am sure that it could be worse. At this point I have several questions that I...

15' Prospector-Ranger

Hi, I am a 1st time strip canoe builder and am happly in progress of building the subject canoe. The strongback went well, as did the forms. If I do build another canoe in the future I will not use pressed board for the forms. It works well, but, does seem to come apart when screws are set into the ...

FOOTBALL-Just to make sure

that I understand. On my 15' prospector I have just rounded off the bilge on each side and about to cover up the ends of the stems with the last two planks that attach to the stems. Question; Is this where the football starts ??? I intend to use the herringbone method of filling in the bottom...
