Re: Raptor Staples
Since the comments have drifted away from the Raptor Staple question, here is my experience on staples... I went with staples on my first boat and found that like Kermit, I was lacking authority (on the strips too). I ended up switching half way through the build (at the turn of the bilge - the stri...

Re: First Time Build
You have received excellent advice by all of the fellow builders, so I won't attempt to repeat any of it. One comment I will add is that (as Brian said), there are some very distinct steps that you need to do, I found that on my first build I overthought each step, wanting to make sure that I was do...

Re: Endeavor 17 Kayak Seat
I use the Surf to Summit kayak seat pad. They have 3 to chose from: https://www.surftosummit.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=seat&x=0&y=0 Mine looks like this one: http://www.surftosummit.com/hot-seat-kayak-seat-spicy-p-1683.html?cPath=283_209 I was looking for a minimalist solution ...

Re: Epoxy problems
I agree with Randy for both the probable cause and recommended action. Looking at the pretty pattern, you have a preparation problem that is either something you wiped on or something that was not properly wiped off during the prep - either way it looks like the surface was contaminated - the patter...

Andrew,
Thanks for the update. The build is coming along nice. Be careful about balancing paddling with building. I have way too many projects partially complete because of the very same thing...

Andrew,
How did your final product turn out? Any pictures and comments on how it sails and paddles?

Re: silicon bronze tube?
Rabbit, I used a copper tube for my painter holes. It worked fine, is easy to work with, colour goes well with WRC, and is readily available in multiple diameters (copper water pipe in 1/2" or 3/4"). Although I am only using my craft in fresh water, I did paddle it for about 18 months in s...

Re: Water based varnish
John, I did not see any post with your results. How did it turn out? How was it to work with? I was looking at picking some up at Noah`s this weekend on our way through, until I saw the price ($66/quart). A bit pricey to start doing experiments with (I thought I would try some on a few paddles that ...

Re: Cedar strips - flat grain or edge grain
The answer to your flat/edge grain question is a personal one - both for asthetics and working properties. Personally, I would not use flatgrain strips, nor would I mix flat with edge or quartersawn. Edge/quatersawn will work nice and even (for both sanding and planning). Although soft woods like ce...

Re: Wet sanding with a spray bottle
I like to carry/apply my water during wet sanding applications in a smallish sponge. It allows controlled application (squeeze or wiping) as well as sludge removal by wiping. With a small bucket of water you can easily "refill" the sponge and clean out the removed sludge from the sponge..
