Re: varnish or clear coat
All: Thanks for the replies. Jim: The Watco was used on varnish, not clearcoat, correct?

varnish or clear coat
I am closing in on the final step- applying the final protective coat. I recall in the past reading in this forum of someone recommending automotive clear coat (urethane) instead of varnish. He stated that it sprays on 3 times thicker and has more UV inhibitors than varnish. Has anyone other than th...

Roundover inwales?
CC doesn't mention rounding over the inside edges, top and bottom, of the inwales. I have cut scuppers in mine. Does anyone recommend using a roundover bit on a router to soften the inwale edges? CC does address rounding over the outwale edges which I plan to do. Thanks. http://i1368.photobucket.com...

Re: Deck Length
Randy: That's a beutiful boat. The 17 in. decks look good as far as size and proportion is concerned.
Thanks

Re: Deck Length
Rabbit: I do not plan on installing bulkheads. And, per CC, the deck doesn't cover the end of the stems. It is mounted in between the inwales flush with the sheer line.
Cutting a cardboard template is a good idea.
Thanks.

Deck Length
Does anyone have a recommended length for a deck on a Redbird that has a good look? Since the bow and stern have a recurved design, I don't want the deck to be too long so that it interferes with the open area of the boat, and not too short so that it doesn't look right. I plan to curve the back (in...

Jim: Thanks.
All: Now I remember why I wanted to locate the yoke now. I want to cut the scuppers prior to installing the inwale have a non-scuppered space for the yoke. Do I guess on a location for the yoke and leave extra space on either side of it non-scuppered?

Re: Gunwales
All: Very good points. I was going to assume the CG wouldn't change with the installation of the inwales, outwales, and decks because they're all symetrical. I was going to calculate the moments created by the seat locations to calculate the new CG then install the yoke a couple inches in front of i...

Re: Gunwales
Randy & Brian: Thanks for your replies. I can install the inwales using clamps, but John recommends assembling and gluing the inwales and the yoke prior to installing the inwales. If I choose to do this, I think I will steam the inwales to make installing the inwale/yoke assembly easier. Again, ...

Re: Gunwales
Brian: That's a good point about wanting to change the yoke design. I hadn't considered it. However, I don't think it likely I would want to change it in the future. Once this craft is built, I'll be using it as is until either it or I fall apart (most likely "I"). I didn't have any troubl...

Gunwales
I have 3 questions: I wish to attach my yoke using John Michne's mortise and tenon technique. My inwale is made of walnut and it's dimensions are 3/4 in. wide on the bottom, 5/8 in. wide on the top (it's beveled to match the tumblehome), and 13/16 in. high. Following the rule of 1/3's for a mortise ...
