when I build again I may go with an alternative to epoxy/fiberglass I appreciate your frustration. What is your intended alternative? Just off the top of my head- A ribbed boat with Canvas covering. I saw a real nice Bear Mountain design prospector that was done that way. I looked this morning at t...

Epoxy/Fiberglass Woes

This is the part of the building process that I do not particularly like. Epoxy/Fiberglass is an excellent and strong element of the type of boatbuilding that most of us here do, but the truth is it never seems to go well for me. I can get the job done, but never without some type of issues. Today i...

Looks good Glen, glad to see you are still "cranking" them out! It is very impressive that you have chosen to design/modify your new builds. I imagine that must take a bit of technical skill and lots of imagination. I am in the midst of building a S&G Kayak. The Night Heron. I wanted t...

Adirondack re-finish job

Thought I would post this here: Here is a photo of the antique (50-60 years old) Adirondack Guideboat (15') that I recently re-finished. To complete the project in an eco-friendly way I opted not to use large (and expensive) quantities of commercial stripper. The heat gun stripping method was not a ...

Update: The antique boat is done- work was done in the most environmentally (green) fashion that could be utilized. All cracks were sealed with west system 205, and the hull has three coats of red paint on it- the inside was left in the original wood. The other boat is on hold indefinitley- too many...

It's been a while- here are where things are at: I have placed my two Adirondack projects on hold temporarliy for the summer, in order to be out on the water in my Hiawatha- so far this summer she has seen 4 lakes and two rivers- one set of small rapids left some nice scratches in her! Ahh, memories...

John, Thanks for the response. The problems I have had concern the ribs. They did turn out as well as I would have liked. Getting the rib foot shaped has been an issue as well. They are still a possibility, but I will have to determine that once the striping begins. In any event the bottom will be a...

Progress continues. I have now started building outdoors with the good weather, well mostly good weather. John Michne's book is great, an excellent resource and tool for the building of this boat. That said- while I am following the plans in the book, I have adopted/customized several of the constru...

I am still moving along- half of the required ribs have been cut, steamed, bent and then glued up. I am doing two sets at a time now and expect I will have them all done in the next 2-3 weeks. Then I will hand sand them and clean them up- and on to creating the skeleton etc... will have to start loo...

So I decided to do a bit of a set up- just so I could see where I am at. I was out there working this morning and to be honest about it, I was feeling a little frustrated with things.... how long it's taking, my sometimes lack of precision, my sometimes tendency to cut before measuring twice- you ge...

Restoration Project

As I mentioned on the Project Directories....I have aquired a 50+ year old 16' Adirondack Guideboat- for a restoration project- Considering the age, and that this boat has not been in the water for years- she is in pretty good shape- photo's on the same site as my building log photos: http://s85.pho...

I use the 4" ABS with 90 degree elbow and cap- Works great for me, relatively inexpensive and simple to set up as well.

Progress continues. Between work, family visits, trips and my other distractions (brewing beer), I have managed to create more ribs- of the 66 required for the boat- I have made about 10% of them (8 ribs to date), making 3-4 at a time. The process consists of slicing the planks to the right size and...
