We built following steamer out of a bucket, funnel and PVC pipe sealed with strips of spounges (between bucket, funnel and pipe). The top of the pipe simply was plugged with a rag. Sitting on top of the gas grill and leaning up against the side of the garage, it did a fine job. Water that condensed ...

Bud, your accent strip looks just fantastic. I keep staring at it. I gotta ask Santa for a router table and a planer for Xmas!

Thanks

Jeff, Thanks for the kind words (and great advice). You can count on a visit to the North Country when we're done!

Strip orientation

This might be a dumb question or one I should have asked earlier... We are building a redbird and have started the stripping process with the lightest wood in our bundle. We will move to the darker wood as we progress toward the bottom of the canoe. We've used up all the clear light strips and are a...

Not sure what upside down really means for a leaf. They tend to fall on my yard in lots of different orientations. But if you're thinking of the leaf on the Canada flag, you're right. It is upside down. It was the Canada flag leaf that made me use the phrase "kind of" in my original post (...

Actually I didn't spend much time on the glue choice. I did think about using epoxy but decided to just use the same Titebond we are using on the stripping. The joints seem to be holding fine and as several have observed, once covered with glass/epoxy should be plenty strong.

thanks.

Here's an update on our butt joints and the maple leaves. http://img.groundspeak.com/cache/log/360fd827-17e3-4bae-ac64-c956cab79e37.jpg All of the joints are butt joints but we inserted a 1/16" piece of cherry in a slot cut with a router in each joint. We'll have to be careful when we sand to e...

Wow, Quick response. Thanks Jeff for the insights. I had been planning on building each of the strips up one at at time and putting them on the canoe one at a time. Given that, I wasn't worried about following the curve of station 0. I was worried about each of the joints in the assembled strips (as...

Advice on Butt Joints

This is my first post on this very helpful system (thanks for all the contributions- I've learned alot). My son (Patrick Pfeifer) and I are building a Redbird. We have begun the stripping process (just 2 strips) but would like to add an accent to the sides. A pattern has been offered (by mom) to bui...
