I had the same issue so I planed one edge of the boards so that it would be smooth against the fence when I ripped 1/4 strips x 1 3/4". Then I cut them down the centre. The I routed the bead on the cut edge follwed by a cove on the rough edge (what would have been the top or bottom of the board...

Almost all of the cedar used was from some planks that I got free from my son's Father-in-Law and they were rough boards 1" thick and 2" thick. From this we ripped 1/4" strips and then split the 2" in half. With the saw kerf taken into account this dropped them down slightly less...

Most of the strips are approximately 3/4" wide. However, the accent strips were made up of 1/2" wide strips of basswood and red cedar. We glued the three rows of strips for the accent strips together and stored them while we assembled the strongback. The centre row uses square butt joints ...

Your comment regarding joinery is something to consider. However, the stems were formed by steam bending them to these forms. If you take 1/4" off the indise, they will not match the forms anymore. As for the joinery problems that might be encountered later with the outer stems, you might have ...

Given your weight I'd consider the Freedon Solo and converting it to a tandem. It had displacement weights where you are looking, low bow height, etc. It has a lower stability factor so you would have to consider that. Some of the others here might be able to comment on how this would perform as a t...

I was hoping that someone else that has used plans would respond but it looks like that might not happen. I didn't use plans for the Redbird we are making but used the offsets from Canoecraft. I checked the book for the Prospector and station 6 height is 23" plus 1/16" so what you are seei...

Just so we're clear here, you do not plan to sit on the thwarts but will either paddle on your knees or sitting on the bottom (with or without some padding). If this is the case I would think that there are two choices. 1. placing the thwarts pretty much where the seats would go so the thwart could ...

Cutting 3/4" off the flat side of the stem forms won't work. You will find that the inner stem is also too high. What worked for me was to use a guage to mark a line 3/4" inside the curve that was cut (from the offset table) and cut the stem forms again. There is a minor note on this in Ca...

When you made the forms for the stems did you take off the 3/4" for the inner stem?

We just finished glassing the outside of a Redbird design shorted from 17'-6" to 16' because my basment would not allow anything bigger to come out of it. (Lots of measuring confirmed 16' is okay. We changed the stations from 12" to 10.75". We also had to reduce the measurement from s...

We glassed the outside this weekend using Raka. Based on this experience I would not have a concern doing it solo if I had to. We had previousy done a pre-coat so I don't know if that made a difference. We followed the measuring method from John Michne's website using clear plastic glasses. The meas...

My old neighbour and I are working on a 16' Redbird. We shorted the plans by moving the stations to 10.75" and adjusted the measurements from station 7 to the Stem form. We added an extra strip above the sheer line for added capacity. We're building it from old cedar boards that I got from my S...

I just checked the latest edition of Canoecraft and while it does not have explicit details the shape is pretty much there on page 90. I'd just use a 1x2 and shape it according to the profiles in the book and call it done. The profile in the book is almost to scale for a 1x2 so you should be able to...

We used plain carpenters glue on our redbird with both White Cedar and Red Cedar strips without any noticible glue lines. As long as you clamp the strips together tightly (especially between stations) you shouldn't have any issues. We had two of us on our build and one would pull the strips together...
