I'm building a Redbird also and I am definately going to put bulkheads in. I'm adding a sail rig to mine and I wouldn't consider not adding some sort of flotation.

I just finished building my accent strips using basswood and redwood. Pine might be a little darker than basswood, but I think you would still get a nice contrast with redwood.
When I get a chance, I'll take some pictures so you can get a better idea.

I would like to suggest that you make the start page of the forum a catagory page instead of like it is now with just a start page for all posts.
