Re: Direction of the scarf joint
GP, I don't think it honestly matters more than the grain orientation .... on the gunnels it is a strength joint so ratio should be 9:1 or better, so it really is a non issue which way you cut it. Having said that, I like it oriented to show from the top, in this link to my last build, I show how I ...

Re: Attaching decks & outwales - opinions?
There are several options for decks, on my last few builds I have opted for top mount, with just epoxy attachment. If you scoot down to the second set of pics in this build post, you can see the design and attachment method, maybe give you some other options or ideas. https://www.canoetripping.net/t...

Re: New build.. first time !
There are basically two ways to start, first strip follows the waterline and when viewed on the water the strips run basically parallel to the water and give a more pleasing look (IMO) ... the other way is to run the strips along the sheer line, giving a curve to the strips (think banana) which is d...

Re: Strongback Construction - Screw or Screw & Glue?
Just follow the book and don't glue it, is my suggestion. I built mine in 2013 and it hasn't budged anywhere .... obviously glue isn't going to actually matter in the construction, however, if you ever need to break it back down ...gluing will prevent that. When building your first canoe, we all see...

Re: discoloring of wood after fiberglassing
As Jim has pointed out, using anything on the wood presents a risk. Acetone on a sanded surface brings nothing to the party other than risk .... plain water to raise the grain is about as much as I risk, even then I use caution with any rags. Remember, what you are seeing isn't likely a "stain&...

Re: discoloring of wood after fiberglassing
It seems very likely that "something" was left on the wood ... you don't give your surface prep process or the epoxy used, but looking at the patterns left, there is little doubt it looks like something was smudged and left on the surface. Residue from a rag or something. If it really both...

Re: Moving - how to store strips
I always like to use dowels in the outside coves to protect them before wrapping. Palletizing tape also works well. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AM-JKLXvC5d0LVUcPHfEBKh31Iovw46dbbU-KpWYK-SaIhS5F0_nKCCZSEA6Anc47OYfvgdKFPy0ewbfZXTdDPllok_rR3FRXzOJEEc_TWMQZpi4I5xhW-DMVKIpfIsBA5YvX-WsvuT4nCJWOi9...

Re: New build.. first time !
Are you are talking about the bead portion of the strip ,at the shear. not being a flat shape ... such that if the gunnel is placed exactly on the sheer, there will be voids because the bead is there and not a flat/square edge surface? Edit: reread your post, the short added strips should be applied...

Re: New build.. first time !
Just to be clear, you won't create any voids .... The first strip runs pretty much parallel to the water along the sheer amidships, as you describe ... with the sheer slowly pulling away towards the ends. You will come back later and add filler strips between that first strip and the sheer, overlapp...

Re: 16" Prospector Station 7 & Stem Issue
This is where a few pics would help "us" help you. If the forms are producing anything other than fair curves there is a problem ... regardless of the cause. If you look at the plans (assuming you have a half set), look at the spacing between forms, if they all look regular, then you need ...

HPD, I like to skarf gunnels together first, then slice them up, you can see the process here a few paragraphs down

Re: Scaling building plans for the Ranger 15 ?
HPD, Not sure what the market is like in your area, but I have found here in Ontario that it is the construction lumber that has gone up. I use mostly rough lumber and the higher end plys, which don't seem to be affected by the shortages. If you can find rough WRC or NWC you may get around the high ...

Re: Scaling building plans for the Ranger 15 ?
HPD, I used a 1/4" bit set which will give a shallower fit on 3/16" strips. This produces coves that have more robust edges, but fit shallower. This isn't an issue unless you have a "curvy" boat and are using wider strips (as I did in that last build). The 3/16" B&C can ...

Re: Scaling building plans for the Ranger 15 ?
Another thing to consider is once you drop the length you can also lighten a lot of other stuff on the canoe. I did the opposite and scaled up a 14' to 15' and took steps to control the weight, it came out at 32 pounds and has several trips, so i feel pretty confident in the construction. Here is th...

Re: Putting stencil on canoe
Hi Doug, I somehow missed this ... if you are going to try any of the general techniques you will find with google search, make sure you try them first ... do a complete run off boat FIRST. I did this successfully using a thin crepe style paper and an ink jet printed sheet. - taped the light paper t...
