I just responded to an ad for plans and molds for a Hipawa canoe. Before committing I was hoping to get some feedback as to this model. I'm basically a high mountain lake paddler. Just quick day trips.
Thanks,
Blair

Re: Kayak kingplank
Rod,
Thanks for the input. I like your idea of the first few planks following the sheer line. Regarding the center planks, facing the bead outward makes sense. Do you square cut the first plank to the center plank? In other words, not bead/cove?

Kayak kingplank
I'm building the Resolute kayak. Various diagrams and pictures in Kayakcraft depict the kingplank extending to the bow and the coverboards meeting the kingplank. Other pictures show the opposite. I believe it makes sense to have the cover boards meet at the bow and have the kingplank intersect at th...

Time between epoxy coats
I will be fiberglassing my kayak hull this weekend. This is my second build using the West 105/207 products. My question is to better understand the proper timing between coats. I have read posts that talk about completing everything in one long day. On my first build, I believe I waited 3 to 4 hour...

kayak strongback
I built a 13" wide strongback top to build my canoe. Kayakcraft suggests a 10" wide top for the strongback. I don't see any negative impact in using the 13" top for the kayak but I'd like some input from the gang.
Thanks

Kayak sheer clamp
I may have missed it, but I can't find anywhere in Kayakcraft where a material is suggested for the sheer clamp. Can it be a light weight material like cedar or does it need to be something similar to gunnel material like ash? I've cut my 4x8 cedar into 1" boards 18' long so I have plenty of ma...

CNC molds
I've recently discovered a local wood shop that offers CNC machining. I'm getting ready to build my second project (Resolute Kayak) and was wondering if anyone has ever converted Bear Mountain Boat plans to a language that CNC machines can read.
Thanks

Plank width
I have come across some beautiful 4x8x18' clear, vertical grain WRC. By my calcs I figure on getting 63 planks. My question is what my max width should be. At the 3 1/2" dimension, I can figure on starting with almost 1 1/8" plank width. My first build utilized 3/4" which I felt was t...

Re: Dyeing cedar
Looks great. So maybe dyeing is a possibility. I'm only considering a few feature strips so it should be OK.

Re: Dyeing cedar
Sounds like you're speaking from experience. Regarding dyeing individual pieces, would you expect bleeding even after some cure time?

Dyeing cedar
Has anyone considered dyeing WRC to achieve various colors? If successful, this could really open the door for dramatic patterns. Think I'll buy some dyes this weekend and apply to some scrap strips. I'll post some pictures if they are at all interesting.
Thanks

Car top transporting
I've just completed my first build and I'm working on how to carry the canoe. One of my vehicles is a pick up and I've purchased a goal post type carrier that mounts to the receiver hitch. I've also purchased a Yakima rack for the cab. My question is whether the canoe should be upside down or not. T...

Re: Design for Limited Workshop Space
I'm jumping in on this thread a bit later than the most recent post but I have some questions along similar lines. I'd like to build my strongback on casters for the similar purpose of moving it around my garage (and outside when I am sanding or glassing). Most every garage floor has a slope. But do...

Re: Stem construction question
I was wondering the same thing. I have a bunch of 1/8" laminate left over from a fly fishing net project that I built. I used walnut and maple as contrasting colors. I'm hoping they look nice with the cedar.
