I think we're back to the purist approach. All natural, etc. BUT Why do you use the new waterproof glues? Why do you use the UV protected varnish? Why do use machined bead and cove strips? Of course, they are better or more modern. I bet when your done with plastic cane, no one will ever know the di...

I have not woven my seats yet but I have purchased the synthetic material or "plastic cane". The reason is very simple. No stretch and not affected by sunlight. Natural cane stretches when wet and doesn't always return to the original shape leaving a "bowl" shape you see so frequ...

Stripping Update...

Well, no more strips... Next I have to draw on the sheer line then mortice and mount the stems and then on to glassing. At least, now I have a Canoe... Here's a photo... http://nomad17.home.comcast.net/~nomad17/StrippedHull.jpg CYA, Joe :wink :wink :wink For more stuff, here's my web site... http://...

I too am building a Nomad and I went with the CanoeCraft strongback and it served me well. After completing the vertical strips and one side with the centerline cut, you start stripping up the last quarter. It is here that you will find whether everything is perfect or not by looking at the matchup ...

Thanks for the accolade... That is the tool in the link and it works great. My "football" has some pretty sharp corners and looks good. I bought the cornering tool for other woodworking projects and pulled it out as a last resort when trying to clean up some beads that I was making. My rou...

Ed, I and I think everyone else also has this problem and it is due to both sides not being level, variances in strip width, etc. but I found a simple solution... At Woodcraft, I bought a little tool used to put a curved bevel on the edge of a piece of wood instead of sanding it. They come in severa...

Update...

Well, a few delays but back in the garage... As you progress day by day on these stems, you finally see what everyone is talking about. Anyway, I'm two strips beyond the stem and putting the compound angles chiseled into each strip end in order to get a good fit with the centerline. A pain in the a*...

Thanks for correcting the url's, the pics look OK... I am proceeding with stripping the right half of the bottom now and then cutting the centerline then stripping other side. I will have a lot of mitering and cutting in but I guess that's par for the course. My "football" seems to extend ...

1-2 more strips...

Took a few photo's and most are on the web site but there are two that I want to put here showing the hull to stem junction. I now see what you are talking about and am now proceeding with the final transition. It was not clear in the book as you mentioned but if you just keep going, it gets clearer...

Starting to make sense...

Gettin close, Glen... I actually saw a picture in my minds eye when I read your last reply. Knowing were the mortise will go for sure helps a bunch. I now see that I can still follow the shape of the mold, there is a little peak on the top, and blend it in with the stem. This will give me a little h...

Another look...

I went out to the garage again and looked hard at my work and have decided to add 2-4 more strips per side before taking photo's. Maybe it will become clearer as I get closer to the critical points. On the Nomad, the strips are still prety vertical, I have 11 strips on each side now, but they are go...

Glen to the rescue... Hi Glen and thanks for the photo's. I saved all the pictures and enlarged them to see what's going on but I am still missing something. Yes, I am cutting the excess strips square across the stem as per the book. I laid up a few strips against the mold and near the top, they are...
