Glue up: A guide keeps plank from diving below hull surface
Problem: Long angles and short planks can be difficult to handle. Under the tension of bending a plank just enough to get the bead (point) heading home (into the cove), a point can dive below the hull surface with just a slight relaxing of your grip and unfortunate alignment. The dive can break off ...

Re: Varnish recommendation
I looked in Ted's book for a specific varnish. No name mentioned. But if you look at the picture on page 175 (6th printing) you will see a can of Pettit and a can of Epifanes (both top of the line products). I think by the time you reach the varnish stage, you do not want to cut corners. Use the bes...

Re: Router bits.
Order on line from MLCS. They will process orders for international customers. I bought a MLCS "stacked" 1/4" shaft bead and cove bit for $27.95. I have milled about 1600 linear feet of bead/cove with this router bit and it is still good to go. I think it was a good buy. http://www.ml...

Re: Easy scuppers
good idea
I do not follow use of a 1" spade bit. On a 3/4" gunwale that would be about a 1/2" round (+ - saw kerf). That seems a bit deep

Re: varnish brushes
I think 7 canoes puts you in the "near expert" category :) I found that putting down an even coat of varnish was a bit of a challenge. I have built 1 canoe (working on a second). On my first canoe, I put 6 coats on the outside. By the 6th, I was getting the hang of it. But even then, I fou...

Re: repairs underway - a cautionary tale
Your experiment with glue should tell the story......... and that is a good safe way to proceed. On my last build, I created a supply of 3 different colors of saw dust just in case I needed it. I sanded scrap plank (not glued up) of 3 different colors with my RO sander and collected what was in the ...

Re: repairs underway - a cautionary tale
Your repairs are looking very good........ as is your canoe. Keep at it and good luck. I think I would put tape on the inside and fill the bad cracks and voids with epoxy. You may even try thickened epoxy for the real bad spots. Your cyanoacrylate adhesive may show up as a nasty looking wound under ...

Re: Round over for Inwales
Gary\ Check out Michne's boat building page. Scroll down to the bottom and you will see the round-over bit (from MLCS) that Michne used (1/8 round over, brass pilot). http://michneboat.com/Gunwales.htm I am 20 strips into my Ranger 15....... so far, pleased with the planking. Good luck on the final ...

Re: Dust nibs, Final Varnish Coat and the Brown Paper Bag Tr
Thank you.
I had my doubts about the effectiveness of using a paper bag, but I tried it. The result was a smooth feel, and at that point, I was DONE varnishing.

Re: Lineage of Bear Mt. Ranger Lines explained by Ron Frenet
Bryan Try "Wooden canoe heritage association" http://store.wcha.org/When-the-Chestnut-was-in-Flower.html Price: $45.00 US I like the way the book is written. I had to print out a map of New Brunswick so that I could follow along as the author took me through the country side. This is a sto...

Re: Lineage of Bear Mt. Chestnut Canoe Co. plans?
I wrote Ron Frenette about my question on how the lines of the Prospector Ranger 15’ were obtained (my lineage question). I became intrigued with the history of Chestnut Canoe Company and the longevity of the lines of canoes that they introduced in the 1920’s. Ron answered my question. For me, it is...

Re: Lineage of Bear Mt. Chestnut Canoe Co. plans?
I am still looking for answers to my lineage question and I think I found a connection between the Bear Mt Ranger 15' plans and Canadian Canoes. On CanadianCanoes.com I found an interesting bit of information under "custom built wood/canvas canoes". One of the canoes offered by Canadian Ca...
