Re: Clarification on sheathing the inside of the hull

Got it. I was having trouble understanding the directions relative to a Redbird. It makes sense now. Thanks to all.

Re: Clarification on sheathing the inside of the hull

All: I am making a Redbird, and there is a lot of re-curve at the bow and stern. My concern is that if I cut the cloth 2-4 in. back at the shear line from the stem (at the top), there will be a big section of the inside of the hull that will not be glassed. In the picture below, the white stick repr...

Re: Clarification on sheathing the inside of the hull

All: According to the posts, the very front (bow and stern) of the inside of the hull is NOT covered with cloth and resin because you cut it short, correct? It will extend to within 2 or 4 inches, depending on where you cut it, of the sheer (the point on the top of the hull where the strips are glue...

Re: Clarification on sheathing the inside of the hull

Randy: So, the very front (in your case, within 2 in. of the of end of the stem at the shear line) of the inside of the strips are not sandwiched between a layer of fiberglass cloth and epoxyy resin- they are only covered on the outside. Interesting!

As always, thanks for your help!

Clarification on sheathing the inside of the hull

I don't understand the statement in Canoecraft that states "To begin with, spread the cloth over the inside of the hull. Center it and cut it so that it ends about 4 inches short of each stem." Later, it states "At the bow and stern, tuck the cloth down to each side of the stem and ov...

Re: Preparing the inside for fiberglassing.

Jim & Randy: Thank you for your replies. I am using a random orbital sander on the flater sections, but have hesitated to turn it on its edge to match the Hull's curve for fear of "digging in". If you have performed this technique successfully, I will give it a try. A pool noodle is a ...

Preparing the inside for fiberglassing.

I am preparing the inside of the hull for glassing. I have scraped the edges of the strips and have started sanding with 80 grit paper. I am not able to sand the bilge area by hand effectively. I can get the relatively flat areas smooth with my random orbital sander, but cannot get the bilge area wi...

Re: Amount of West System 207 hardener

Rod: Yes, by 2 coats I mean one coat to saturate the fiberglass cloth, and one additional, final coat. On the outside, I applied 3: one to saturate the cloth, the second to fill the weave, and the third to provide a smooth finish.

Thanks for your reply.

Amount of West System 207 hardener

For various reasons, I have used up more of my 207 hardener. It may have to do with the fact that I was having trouble with the pump initially and may have used some up trying to get the pump to prime. I have applied the cloth and resin to the outside of the hull- I have the inside to do. I only hav...

Re: fiberglassing the stems

Grumple: I used 4 boards of western red cedar. The long accent strips the length of the boat are ash and walnut. On the bottom, the accent strips are redwood (stained with Minwax waterbased stain) and maple. The side accents midships are redwood(stained), cherry(stained), and maple. I laid the strip...

Re: fiberglassing the stems

All: I added a bias cut strip of cloth to the outer stem during the application of the second coat of resin. It turned out well, except I did not successfully featheredge the cloth to the surrounding epoxy surface. I now have a discrete cloth edge in the surface. http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...

Re: fiberglassing the stems

Randy: Since the rectangular piece of fiberglass will be covering a curved object, should I cut "V's" in the side of the fabric that will extend over the strips to as to prevent the natural overlaps?

Thanks.
