Prospector stem
Moving station 7 does have an effect on fairing all the way along, bottom to top. Placing the station 7 form, to the plan point, preserves the designers rendition of course. However, this doesn't prevent you moving or even changing the shape to suit your artistic view. Placing scrap 1/4" strips...

Prospector stem
Hey Edmontonian, glad you're making progress. I forgot to ask about the edge of the stem form which contacts mold 6: When the stem mold is plotted, the edge towards mold 6, is assumed to be on the "reference" edge of mold 6. This means, if the reference edge is toward the inside of the hul...

Prospector stem
You say that the inner stem sits flush with the top of station 6. You do mean that the tops of both the stem and station 6 are flush? Not that the bottom of the stem is flush with the to of station 6? If you "took half of the stem mold, leaving 3/8"", then your stem mold is 3/4" ...

Prospector stem
Edmontonian, to be clear; you have set the stem form against mold 6 and you have layed up and glued the inner and outer stems? If this is the case, the stem mold, where it meets station 6, should be 3/4" below station 6. when you add the inner stem to the stem mold, the top of the stem should b...

Thank you Randy for the picture. It's a beautiful thing! Yes, it might be considered expensive, but minute compared to the effort you put into the gorgeous treatment of the ribs. I'm happy that you legitimized the use of a through eye bolt on your canoe. I got beat up pretty bad, here, for suggestin...

Very nice craftmans-ship Randy.
Wood-working supreme.
It appears that you've installed an eyebolt + ring? Tells about that.

Glassing the stems
Ya, Glen's the man :smile When you get to the inside of the hull, it's nice to cover the inside stem with a separate piece and not try to cover the stem with the main cloth. Bias cut glass is the only way to accomplish that. Inside and out, bias cut cloth 5" to 6" wide is nice. Narrower pi...

Mortise & tenon
Sounds like you're having fun. You probably already know this, but it's suggested that the mortise be about 1/8" deeper than the tenon. This is to give some space for the extra glue/epoxy to settle. I also like to cut a small groove (1/32") in the length of the tenon to help relieve any gl...

Inwale prep order
The "correct" order, I guess, would be how confortable you'd be putting the taper on a 16' inwale after cutting the scuppers. They get a little weak at the center. You can tape the inwales together and cut the tapers at the same time in this case. The other thing to think about is when to ...

Stems
On the canoes I've built, I've never found it necessary to screw down the inner stem at the keel. I use a single 2 1/2" C-Clamp near the form clamping into 2" holes I drilled into the stem form. You're probably going to have other C-Clamps along the inner stem removing them as you strip up...

Filling fine cracks
If you're planning on doing an epoxy pre-coat, perhaps you could fill the cracks then using a squeege forcing the epoxy through.

Steamer Pipe
PVC does go to wet noodle mode when hot. I steam in a 4' length of 2" sched 40 PVC placed inside a 4" x 4' length of common vent pipe.
