I used BER Super spar from Home Hardware. The things I liked about it was That it had a UV of 45 It was easy to obtain and get more when ever I want to reapply The fumes were not to bad It was easy to work will and leveled quiet well And most of all the color came out as a light coco and not yellow ...

Sticker shock

I bought most of my clamps at Army & Navy Surplus and they ran me at about 1,99 each. They were all metal but not the some quality as the one's from the hareware store. Then again They worked and how often are you going to need 35 clamps again.

Stem band Keel

I glued mine on like Jeff had mentioned. So far so good . As with all projects you always think of what you would do different next time . So my question is ? Has anyone glued a stemband from end to end with no holes because you have no keel. It becomes the keel . How has it held up. Thanks Paul

It was recommended that I shave off 3/4 of an inch off the stem mold but chose not to. In order to give it a longer nose and left station 8 alone . It seem to work. Paul

Yes I used the same 16 ft strongback Ted shows in Conoe Craft . Just double creck the length of your stems on the stem mold after they are made. They may touch the strongback. So I can't see why you couldn't shorten it a foot. It would make shaping the stems easier.

How

You adjust the spacing of your station molds to 11 1/4 in instead of 12 in . If you would like some pics leave me an address and judge for your self .Paul

What

John A year ago I was in the same boat ( two kids age 4 and 6 ). What worked for me was I built a Redbird at 16 .5 ft and it came in at 58 lbs and could go lighter ( excluding bulkheads, long cherry decks, deep dish cherry yolk). The Redbird original size comes in at something like 94 in the stabili...

If your not planning to jump in right away. I built the model first time out and avoided most of those first time mistakes . Also it gave me the best idea of what to look out for.

What came first

I found that I had a hard time clamping my decks to the inwales. So I put in a couple of #8 1 1/4 screws to pull every thing tight. Then covered them up with the outwale. Just make sure you mark where the screws are to avoid them if you screw in your outwales

Polyurethane or Spar

I know this subject was discussed to death on the old board . Someone had to bring it up again for us newbies . ( Also I wasn't paying attention then ) Peter Hyde gave me a good breakdown on how to apply 2 part polyurethane and I have used spar varnish on my bamboo rod rebuilds . But I am still unde...

Tapering Outwales

I plan on tapering my outwales to a point and was wondering ? If I was better to steam bend my outwale then go at them with a hand plain or to rough them out before steam bending.

How long

I like Jim's reply. After how it is built the second question is always how long. Though I never kept track. My reply always is that where do you start. Do you start with the reseach on how to build it, or where to get the supplies or the model I built first , picking a plan or building the strong b...
