Thanks for that little gem Greg.I've just given the hull another brush coat and I can see things aren't perfect as I still have a few minor bubbles but it is my first attempt and I still think it looks good.Hopefully you can see in the picture! cheers Alick http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn18/al...

Thanks Rick I've been sanding all day and I don't think I've sanded too far as my epoxy layer seems very thick even when I have sanded off most of my lumps. It is all looking a lot better!.I think i'll finish sanding it all to the same degree and put my final coat on next weekend. What I now have is ...

sanding and a further layer of epoxy on a lumpy hull.
I have just spent the past couple of days glassing my hull which has ended up far more uneven than I would like.I started on friday and did my wetout followed by a second coat which was squeegeed over to finish it off.Yesterday I put a coat on with a brush and again found that once squeegeed over it...

Thankyou Glen I've just spent a couple of hours fitting the keel splices a bit better and hoovering the place down in preparation. It's now twelve noon here so I think i'll have to postpone the 'operation' till next weekend. As my cloth is going to be joined under the keel is it wise to tape it to th...

should cloth go under or over my keel ?
I am building a peterborough canoe with keel and outer stems. following instructions in canoecraft I have fixed my outer stems and the splices with my keel are almost complete. Should I fit the cloth under the keel cutting it to come up over the outer stems? Or would it be better to fit and finish s...

How to fit even the cheapest screws without breaking them.
Even the best brass screws can break when put into hardwood. One method I often use to avoid breaking brass screws when putting them into hardwood is to put steel ones of the same size in the hole first. That way the hole is cut by the stronger screw and you can then put your final screws in place wit...

Thankyou for your replies I guess I'll have to wait till next summer but I am going to experiment with electric fan heaters. Is it true that I only need to get the temperature up for a day or two whilst I work and curing takes place? Why oh why did I get the wrong hardener?!!!Arrgh. :shocked such is...

how cold is too cold for resin?
Just how cold is too cold for working resin? I have the west system 105 resin with 206 hardner. Is this going to lead to an opaque finish? My workshop is a 20ft by 60ft corrugated shed which currently has no heating and is at a temperature of 15 degrees c.(60F)..It's a sunny lunch time. do I need to ...

Thankyou for your reply, I am mulling it over and slowly coming around to that way of thinking.I am currently chiselling away the back of my keel and getting it to sit on the base of my canoe sweetly. I realise that i will still have to re fit my splices slightly to account for the cloth and resin u...

radius of cutters for beads
Thankyou for all your replies I think i'll go with the 4mm option as it will leave me with less fragile corners on the cove cut! :smile

exactly what radius should i have on my bead and cove strips
After a long absence(of about a year and a bit!) I have finally resumed work on my first canoe.I know I might be being picky but I'm just about to mould the edges of my strips and(lucky me) I have two options.I can either go with a 3mm radius cutter or opt for a slightly flatter 4mm radius.(for both...

adhesives for laminating stems
Thanks guys you've convinced me epoxy is the way to go.This has led me to a couple more questions. Is the mix ratio to be the same as that I would use to skin the boat with or do I make it a different amount of hardner to adhesive? If I add wooddust to it will this affect the strength and how much s...

Adhesives for laminating stems
I am currently in the process of making my first woodstrip canoe using ted moores excellent book as my guide. I have just steam bent the parts for my stems and am finding it difficult to get a large enough quantity of epoxy glue for them (in the uk)without resorting to buying lots of small tubes at ...
