Thanks Rick, some interesting points to consider. I do like the high stems for the visual effect, but I have noticed the problem with windage when paddleing solo. Maybe he will go for the lower profile with higher gunwhales.

Increasing freeboard

A friend wants to use my Hiawatha formers to make a boat, but he requires more volume. Has anyone done this by increasing the freeboard with a few more strips. My concerns are stability. overall handling and the visual effects.
Any input would be appreciated.

Hi Heikki, Thanks for the quick reply. I don't know the Ranger. What are the dimentions, and who designed it? My last build was a Bearmountain Hiawatha. Like you I used WRC strips, ash stems and seats, but for the deck I used Meranti , a light species of mahogany with a good colour. For the thwart I...

Hi J. M.
Where in the U.K. are you based? I haven't come across any other U.K. builders, may be we could swap notes.

Narrow cloth

Hi Glen, You gave me the contact or the German company. Unfortunately they no longer produce wide cloth. There maybe someone in Europe producing it, but I have yet to find them. I would say to European builders ,"Bite the bullet and go across the pond." As well as being easier with wide cl...

Cloth width

Hi, Having built two boats, the first with narrow cloth joined down the keel and the second with 60" cloth imported from the U.S. I would go for the latter everytime. Trying to keep narrow cloth in place whilst wetting it out is a nightmare. I would pay the shipping costs and get it from the St...

Finished at last

Hi, I have just finished my Hiawatha and would like to thank all those who helped and gave advice. I was asked to show it at the Welsh Canoe and Kayak Show and it attracted much attention. The burning question now is, what will the next build be? A sea kayak seems to be top of the list. Regards, Ric...

Yolk design

Hi Rick, Simply superb, just what I wanted. Your contribution on this thread interested me as weight is a major consideration on my Hiawatha. My first build was a Peterborough using the belt and bracers philosophy, and it ended up far too heavy for lifting on and off roof racks, even though I was ver...

Hi Randy Sorry to be so long replying but life has been hectic. Yes I did make the seats and wove the cane. The weaving was interesting at first but soon becomes laborious, however, you will have great satisfaction when it is finished. Personally I cannot imagine buying anything other than materials...
