Halt for the winter

Had to halt for the winter due to temps and shop space (lack of). Due to unemployment and other factors the Freedom just couldn't get done this year and the hull and strongback has been raised to the trusses in the garage. (legs removed from the strongback so we don't crack our heads open.) Too cold...

Battenkiller,.. the jig is not elaborate on purpose. My stepped jig will do nothing more than be a general guide and mostly the heel of my plane will be controlled by my hand or fingers. My method is mostly freehand. I place the "next" strip on the hull as a dry fit and visually eyeball ho...

I don't get the rolling bevel part. Doesn't that way put the same angle on the bevel throuout the strip length? Also possible that I'm a little dense today. Hey Battenkiller - welcome to the fray. The rolling bevel angle needs to change as you go along the strip yes. Hence the name,..the plane has ...

One canoe finished with 1/2" particle board forms with the edges varnished. Worked better than I ever would have hoped using staples. Started a second canoe with 1/2" particle board forms (Freedom) and going stapless with rubber bands believe it or not and again - it's working remarkably w...

I ordered from Newfound Woodworks and Michael is a great guy to work with. You can order by the yard exactly what you need. We went with 60" on our son's solo and used the cut off for the bias applications over the stems. With the size of a Hiawatha you might need 60" but other minds will ...

There are oodles of suppliers but I start (typically) with Jamestown Distributors. We wound up not using a painter type approach at all but we looked over some of the same questions you have. I'm sure you've run across these guys.

Thanks man!

Question regarding kevlar and strip (does relate to buiding)

Question to those on the board who have paddled both Kevlar and cedarstrip canoes. (anybody actually built both?) Without starting a row on cedarstrip versus kevlar, how do the kevlars stand up to heavy chop? The Kevlar we rented 2008 summer BWCA trip (17' Spirit II) was adequate but even with ribs ...

Best of luck on the guide boat. The folks on this board can be very helpful, with the possible exception of myself. :laughing

Nice choice of font size there Woody.

Hi Lance! Boy I love the Adirondack Guide Boats. Sounds to me like you're already off to a good start. Once you see what takes shape under your hands you won't be able to build just one.

We saved you a spot - we knew you were coming see. (well, Glen knew you were anyway)

McFly I am also building a Freedom and have molds similar to yours. I am intrigued by your proposition. I think it is doable. I would still cut it proud of the shear line and still plane down to it when the gunnels are in place. If you do a test and you drop dead nail it with confidence then go to t...

MB that's quite a rig. Even I could do something like that. Screw down your router and simply adjust your plunge depth? Neat.

I think I'm going to have to run some more experiments and/or change my hot glue. And maybe my glue gun does not get hot enough. Don't really know at this point. I'm just not coming up with the same results as those who have used hot glue in this fashion. For sure it does NOT stick to my tape on the...

Yeah Sloggo - I'd be interested. Besides anyone using the Search Engine would be able to see it as well if they were looking for types of hot glue to use. If you could find it that'd be great.
