Tools
It sounds like you'll have most of the power tools you'll need. I just got to sanding the inside on my 15' Ranger and the only oddball tool that I didn't have when I started was a set of cabinet scrapers which came in very handy throughout the process. A sharp paint scraper can also work. I also rea...

Amine blush
I waited 3 days and then sanded the outside. After flipping it over I started sanding the inside and noticed a haze covering the outside, is this amine blush? It was pretty nice looking before this haze started now it looks kind of splotchy.

no expert but..
While this is my first canoe, I have done some fairly extensive research and don't remember coming across any references to 1/4 inch leading edge on stems but anything is possible. My guess is the last person to use the book changed his and didn't want to forget so he noted it in the book. My mother...

No problem AlanWS..
Alan, no sweat. It was worth a try and I hadn't had any epoxy "kick" on me, so the experience was sort of helpful, as I know what to expect now if it does. The reaction can be pretty unsettling if you aren't ready for it. I may try it again later but I decided to flip the hull and get to s...

names
I like your list of names but think the final choice should be yours. I haven't even decided what to name mine yet, :thinking. I just wanted to say if this one turns out half as good as the last one you made it's going to be a beauty. It's terrible what happened to the last one. Good luck on picking...

Okay Rod, I'll try that next..
The 1/2 resin and hardener method didn't work. Once it started to get warm, I added the rest of the resin and It really kicked off then. Luckily I mixed in a metal can and had a 5 gallon bucket of water ready. I ended up using filings from a batch that had dried from a few days ago mixed with a regu...

good ideas
I'm leaning towards the half resin mix method. I'm going to try some file shavings added to it to make it a little stiffer. thanks again, time to eat then back at it.

Clear thickener and/or filler?
:embarassed Well, I went and installed my rope stem bands and mixed up a batch of milled fiber to fill in around the edge and to my surprise it turned grey. Does anyone have any ideas for a thickener or filler that would mix with epoxy and remain sort of clearish? I love the look of the rope at the ...

A few answers..
Thanks for the positive feedback on the pictures. The wood is western red cedar. (Lowe's) I got the herringbone pattern from Sam Buchanan's Strip Canoe Journal and kind of ad-libbed the bead and cove on it as I went. It wasn't real fun but the looks make up for the work. (I guess) There is a link be...

Pictures of progress (finally)
http://share.shutterfly.com/action/share/view?i=EeANmjFi2cuG7iw&open=1&x=1&sm=0&sl=0&open=1[/url] Here is a link to some pictures of my canoe. It has 3 heavy coats of epoxy and I added a fourth to smooth it out before sanding, since I wanted to be able to uh... shape as needed. T...

Victory!!
First coat came out kind of spotty, as some areas were filled too heavy. Also had a lot of little pimples ??? I let that dry for four hours and then gave it a very light sand and put second coat on and to my surprise, a pretty good looking coat nearly covering weave of glass resulted. (WHEW!!) Does ...

sweating bullets
Well, as far as conditions go the garage is heated to 70 degrees (F), the epoxy is US composites medium (3 to 1 ) with 6oz cloth from US composites (compatable coating, I asked). The wood is cedar and it was sanded to 120 (I had to use 150 on my canoe since I couldn't find 120 hook and loop pads). R...

Glassing on Wednesday
Finally glassing (had to paint kitchen GRRR..). I did find time to cut and epoxy a test piece though. I did three coats on it and the third just barely shows the weave. When the panel was taken into the sunlight, I noticed glass fibers in the first coat where the glass meets the wood. Two questions:...

Right on time
Just getting ready to do this step myself. There are some other posts about filling and sanding, if you do a search for "gaps" they come up. Or just use Glen's advice. He's very quick to respond with good answers. Thanks, Glen
