Re: Varnish

Jamie, Be sure to show us some pictures of your gunwhales (in various states of build). When you rabet your outwhales, be sure to measure your hull thickness and cut your rabet slightly deeper than the hull thickness so that when you mate the outwhale your final sanding on the inboard face of the ou...

Woodguy00 Interesting question. I see many ways to finish up this detail (I know that is not your question...). I am not sure that I would use a cherry wedge where you are thinking (with the cherry decks) Although you will have symmetry, the fine wedges will kind of stick out on their own and move y...

My original paddling with my endeavour was in semi open and very large bays (Pacific). I always felt safe in her, but did find that aft-quartering waves are a bit of work to keep the intended course, especially if they are large with a very short period. The largest waves that I paddled was 3-3.5 ft...

Merry Christamas 2010

Merry Christmas to all you builders and lurkers out there.

May you have a safe and happy holiday season!

Best regards,

PS - I am off to make a rink on the river tonight. Maybe I can ask Santa to lend a hand...

Patrick's Dad, I looked long and hard at different configurations and decided that until I got more experience, I would go with what has been shown to be tried and true - especially since my canoe/kayak use sees a varied environment. Given your limited expression of your intended use, I know what I ...

Very nice job on the canoe!! Funny to hear your flipping venture. I have also recently taken a dunk (in my kayak) and also destroyed my camera. At the time, my concern was more focused on survival and by the time I had that under control, I knew it was too late for the camera which had been submerse...

Ditto on Glen/Ken 's recommendations. I will also add a recommendation to take a photo of your block installation (with some reference information/measure) before you install the deck. It will make finding the extremeties easier, should you decide to add a rudder down the road. BTW - I never did ins...

Wow- outstanding!!! I am sure that this project is something very dear for a Navy man! Very nice detail. I also like the lacewood - I have to admit that I have never heard of it (had to Google it to find out more). I have to ask - why the everglades??? Happy paddling (and a safe journey). Snowman

Although my build was not a true "Freedom" by Steven Killing, I have built a very similar design. I essentially did what you described, but slightly forcing the ends a bit beyond the "natural droop." I had very little to fill on the stern and only a few more fill strips on the bo...

Have a look at this article - http://www.paddlinglight.com/articles/light-but-strong-building-cedar-strip-canoes-for-wilderness-tripping/ I can probably give some marginally useful information of how to wind up with a heavy canoe (my self design build came out at 63 lbs). You can deduce some steps o...

Gents, While I am no expert, I spent a great deal of time making my seats (too much time - as I have a weight complex and laminated my seats with a cedar core and maple outer laminates - not sure I would do that again even though I saved some weight...). So, back to the question of hole treatment. I...

Did any of you out there apply a touch of counter sink to the holes to take the edge off? I thought it would be easy to do. I used the bottom side of the frame to set up the depth stop to get it right and found that it was hard to get a nice cut in the hole. The CS bits that I have have a shaft size...

Sherm, Thanks for sharing. I will be preping the seats this week after work each night. I have a few steps to do yet (holes + CS touch, stain, epoxy, varnish). I probably could come close to caning this upcoming weekend, but I have travel on the weekend. I may have some questions when I start pullin...
