Re: Redbird 17' Sanity Check

Hello woodworkbythewater, I have finally located my copies of Canoecraft and it would appear you are using a 1983 edition of the book. This means that some of the terminology is different and also the method of plotting the sheer is slightly different than what Brian has posted. These are the values...

Re: Redbird 17' Sanity Check

You now need to add a stalk to each mushroom cap, but how long should they be? Because every sheer point is a different height, every mushroom stalk will need to be a different length. The bottom of each mushroom stalk defines the strongback line. You need to hold each mushroom cap above the strong...

Re: Redbird 17' Sanity Check

I'm not totally sure I know what's going on here but I have some ideas. There are three caveats: 1. I lofted the Redbird a LONG time ago in a graphics program but I never built it. 2. My copies of Canoecraft are MIA after a recent move so I'm relying on memory for methods and terminology. 3. Most of...

Re: Redbird 17' Sanity Check

These are the corrections for the 2000 edition of Canoecraft. There are no corrections listed for the Redbird at all, so I don't think that is your problem. http://web.archive.org/web/20121108113627/http://bearmountainboats.com/2012BACKUP-OLDSITE/canoestems.htm I don't have the 2015 edition but I kn...

These are the topics I could find in the forum on Nomad stability, but I'm not sure if they apply to your situation. http://buildersforum.bearmountainboats.com/search.php?keywords=nomad+stability&terms=all&author=&fid%5B%5D=21&sc=1&sf=all&sr=topics&sk=t&sd=d&st=0&...

Re: Sport Boat Plans

The man's own website doesn't have a link to buy the plans http://www.robbwhite.com/sportboat.html , but the folks in this video seem to have bought plans via snail-mail since Robb White died. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1Sf5MbOg_Q You might consider the Bear Mountain Rice Lake Skiff or Whiteha...

Re: Stems

Jim You should check out Bear Mountain's You Tube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/Canoecraft/videos?disable_polymer=1 . If you go to the bottom of the page and click "load more" a couple of times there are quite a few videos, some of which deal with stems. How to Laminate Stems https:...

Re: Endeavour 17 - Sheer Clamp Questions

Hi Chris 1) Sheer clamps not flush with molds - On page 83 of KayakCraft it talks about how the sheer clamp should be flush with the molds. I am not familiar with Kayakcaft, but I'm going to assume that kayak molds work similar to canoe molds. In your photos it looks to me like the side of the mold ...

Re: Redbird station 8

Brian Stations 6,7,8 are near the canoe middle ... can't see how they would be useful in shaping the stems. This is true for an asymmetric canoe such as the Freedom, which I know you've built, but not for the Redbird described in the post. If you check a symmetric canoe in Canoecraft, you will find ...

Re: Interpretation @ 1 1/2 in revised Ranger offsets

This is what Bear Mountain used to have posted for corrections. Please note that this applies to the 2000 edition of Canoecraft. I have no idea if it also applies to the 2016 edition. http://web.archive.org/web/201211081136 ... estems.htm

I'll also point you at Dawne Olsen's excellent photo album of a Bear Mountain kayak, although it doesn't have a close-up photo of what you're after. https://get.google.com/albumarchive/117 ... jDxWfbeIAR

Re: Shear Clamp vs Inner Stem

Hi Smitty I found this after some searching online. I think it's what you're after. http://media.photobucket.com/user/glenkayak/media/Sheer%20Clamps/SC-1.jpg.html There's also this, but it was the first thing google found so you've probably already seen it. I'm not sure if the bevel of the sheer cla...
