Re: Slight Alignment Issues with Stem
Thanks for the quick response. Would I not also have to shave the planks to keep the stern fair? Or can I "bevel" the stem and tip of the planks to clean it up? My concern is that the stem is already "fair" to the existing planking and to remove the gap I would need to remove pla...

Re: Slight Alignment Issues with Stem
Randy, I agree it's not a big issue, I am just trying to figure out the best way to remedy it. The stem almost 'squares' off at the planking and therefore creates a gap from being completely flush with the face of the planking. I'm looking for the best method to fill the gap. I am planning to instal...

Re: Shaping inner stems...Michne stick question
I used the sanding stick method, and found that you definitely want to be at least 1/2 a plank further along, thus preventing possible outward angling of the strips...(don't ask how I know). It also reduces damage to the installed strip, if you don't have to keep running your sanding stick along the...

Re: Slight Alignment Issues with Stem
Not screwing it in... really wasn't comfortable with screwing as my stem were made a tad small to begin with. Also the stern was the first time I have ever used that much two part epoxy, and I was petrified of touching/moving the parts. Got over that fast with the bow stem.

Slight Alignment Issues with Stem
I calved this off from my Freedom 17'9 Update post, hoping it wont get lost in the pile of photos... Here is the issue, the stern stem shifted slightly, and now I have about a milimeter of endgrain showing on the starboard side.... :crying https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-yNjn1i9RDto/U8ZqZ7CfBHI/A...

Re: Minor Freedom 17'9" update
Back with a much delayed update. Family gatherings, funerals and sickness all colluded to hinder any real progress on the canoe. Here is the stern stem after the resin had cured, I had removed the lower straps, don't worry... there were 5 originally. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-h54EF7oHlwA/U8...

Re: Minor Freedom 17'9" update
I have seen the light at the end of the tunnel, which unfortunately is passing through some of my strips... :laughing Some spectacular gaps aside, I am really happy with how she has gone together. Here is a photo of my ugly mug just as I successfully dry-fitted my football. https://lh4.googleusercon...

Question: Best way to transfer centre line to strips
Fast approaching the dreaded centre-line trim. Having a real difficult time lining up the centreline. With a string line, I can see that the marks are lined up, but can't seem to join 3 in one go to save my life.

Re: Minor Freedom 17'9" update
Man, I really haven't updated the update recently... :sad The temperatures have finally started to cooperate with my glue, and I re-started stripping the beast 3 weeks ago. I have passed the bilge turns, and have finally gotten to a point were I am comfortable approaching the keel-line from one side...

Re: How to get rid of unfinished canoe.
Are you referring to the bending of the stems over the forms? If so, I used Patrick's Dad's method of steam bending and it worked like a charm... I was able to make a simple steam tube with black drain pipe and a sheet of plexi. I might have posted an image here... I will check, otherwise I can uplo...

Your storage system is exactly what I am planning on doing. I was thinking of black ports, but I like your idea of painting a white panel... may have to borrow that idea.

Re: How to get rid of unfinished canoe.
Perhaps there is a local forum member who might be able to assist you in your shaping. On my 17'9 Freedom, all my strips have been attaching to the inner stem vertically. I am just getting to the stem curve, and have yet to have any real change to the orientation of the stripes to the stem. I am def...
