Re: Table of Offsets Chestnut Prospector

I also noticed that Brians description calls for the +/- to indicate 1/8". Whereas my book indicates 1/32" for the +/-.
This is another thing that changed in 2000. Before then, +/- did indeed mean 1/32". Since then + has meant 1/16" (- is no longer used at all)

Re: Table of Offsets Chestnut Prospector

Brian's link is a welcome explanation of a topic a lot of people seem to struggle with, however, since what you have is a reprint of the original edition, a lot of the terminology will be unfamiliar. Brian is working from a post-2000 edition. In the original edition, Ted invented his own modified ta...

Re: Table of Offsets Chestnut Prospector

Are these offsets from the newest edition of Canoecraft? I have the 1983 edition and the 2000 edition and I'm not seeing the numbers you're referring to. Something in the back of my brain says this was done in later editions between '83 and 2000. Anyway, I found a really old Glen Smith post that may...

Re: Inches

You've got it pretty well figured out. 1-09-4 means 1 foot, 9 inches and 4 eighths. + means to add 1 sixteenth to 4 eighths. So 1-09-4+ means 1 foot, 9 and 9/16 inches. If you are using an edition of Canoecraft published between 2000 and 2015, you need to know that there are a few errors in the dime...

Are you there, Alick Burt?

When I searched the forums, the only member I could find who mentions using a spindle moulder is Alick Burt. http://buildersforum.bearmountainboats.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4576&p=28576#p28576 I haven't seen him post anything this year, so I'm not sure if he's still visiting the forum or not....

Re: Next!

According to Bear Mountain, both the Ranger and Bob's are listed as "Comfortable for most paddlers". The Bob's has a stability factor of 100, while the Ranger is slightly higher at 104.

Re: Quantity of materials (Canoe Ranger 15)

Tomkis I like to start with at least 24 " of plank with, Two 1"x12", or three 1"x8". Bear in mind that in North America we use what is called nominal lumber size. I do not know if lumber in Norway is nominal or exact size. Nominal size is the size of the board before planing...

Re: Quantity of materials (Canoe Ranger 15)

Welcome Tomkis, To figure out the length of full length strips, the common rule is to add 1 foot (~30cm) to the length of the canoe. For the Ranger this would be 16 ft (~4.88 m) It is not necessary to use full length strips, but many prefer it for aesthetic reasons. You can join strips end to end, e...

Posting links to build logs here is a time-honoured tradition; I don't think you can ever have too many. Using a boat to haul material to build another boat shows the inventiveness which will get you through this project successfully. I have bookmarked your site and will continue to watch your progr...

Re: mitering second half of football Tips

Would i guy be able to extent the outer stem a inch or so past the 6th station to cover any ugly miters in the compound section? I assume your inner stem ends right at station 6. If so, extending the outer stem past station 6 may lead to unpleasant surprises. When you excavate the outer stem mortic...

Re: Huron Cruiser Project Log

Here's a post that seems relevant to your problem. http://buildersforum.bearmountainboats.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1725#p10542 Rob Macks has some advice on bending strips with a heat gun, but apparently kiln-dried wood will often scorch a bit before bending (he prefers air-dried): http://www.laug...
