Thanks all for the help along the way

Many thanks to all who helped me out with the build. Special thanks to Jim Dodd and Patricks Dad for the many suggestions. Completed the Rob Roy two weeks back and she has been to the lake a few times. Second one to be build in the fall (for the wife) - and yes I'll use horizontal grain boards this ...

Re: Floatation Compartment

Many thanks. I almost glassed both sides before trying to install. I give that a try this week.

Re: First time builder

Depending on the species of pine it can actually be lighter. See this link http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/wood-density-d_40.html If find pine to be softer than cedar and the grain is not fantastic. I am originally from the northwest in western cedar country. Lived in Texas the last 8 years and ha...

Re: Floatation Compartment

I too am just installing them. Question I have is do you simply shape them as best you can and then epoxy the edges or do you put cloth around the edges?

Strip length for Endeavour 17

As I get closer to finishing my Rob Roy I am thinking about the next one.... :sealed lips . Haven't spoken to the wife yet, but thinking about making a kayak. Simple question I have is how long of strips do I need for making the 17 foot endeavour? I'll be near my cedar supplier in the next few days ...

Some pics of my Rob Roy

Indeed the face grain strips took some extra care and handling, but it has worked out so far. I have edge grain strips ready for the second one. Planning to take this one off the stations this weekend.

Re: Few fiber glassing questions

Thanks for the input. Stapleless construction. Bead and cove. No knots and no cracks (well at least I filled the few I had). So no precoat it will be. I'll trim the cloth at the stems and use a bias wrap later. Hope to do this weekend. Temperature is cool (15C - 59F) but I have a heated shop which i...

Few fiber glassing questions

Well got busy last week and stripped the canoe and this weekend epoxied on and shaped the outer stems. Other than a light sanding with some finer sandpaper I am ready to glass the canoe. As I was finishing one of the stems I got to thinking about how to handle the stems when fiber glassing. I watche...

Re: Estimate of amount of epoxy

On grain direction. I went with the VG for two reasons. 1. Thirty years ago when building my first, I built it with VG planks. Lack of knowledge for sure - it was about getting it built. I had 3 months to build it and only a set of diagrams to work from. Canoe is banged up, but still solid. 2. Wood ...

Estimate of amount of epoxy

It was a good weekend. Made the trip to Vancouver to get some cedar. Yes I now live in the center of wrc territory bur couldn't find anywhere to buy it so I went to sunbury cedar. It is the candy store of cedar. I picked up 7 5/4 x 4 clear vertical grain boards. Beautiful stuff. Anyway now I'll fina...

Re: Another new project

My mistake. Somehow I connected to a photo gallery from one of your posts and thought they were your pictures. Nice seat. I did make one like that on my first canoe 35 years ago. Still have that canoe, but it is a bit beat up now. It was a 19 foot MicMac and weighs a ton. Built it in 3 months while ...

Re: Another new project

Randy, Had a look at some of the pictures you have posted. Thanks for the views. I was wondering how you wove the seats you have on all of your canoes. It does not look like it a weave but rather just straight strands of leather somehow secured at each end. Could you describe how the leather is secu...
