Stitched Kevlar

We got it from Noah's Marine (or maybe I have my terms mixed up). What we got last time was the 8.9 oz, 58" Kevlar 49 twill. Noah's recommended the double bias aircraft Kevlar (9 oz 64"), as it is a bit stronger. It's also a bit wider, although very slightly heavier. It doesn't fuzz upon t...

Paddle answers

Almost all our paddling is done on lakes, typically 5-7 day trips. I'm not sure about the Canadian vs Minnesota "style". I taught canoeing as a Boy Scout councillor way back when, so I know (and use) the "J" when necessary. Mostly I just angle the paddle for sort of a continous &...

First of three Kevlars laid up today

http://www.myrabo.com/k-canoe/kevlarII/images/080506done1.JPG This is a Moran-style canoe (tripper), the 3rd we've made from this mold. Details of the first two are on http://www.myrabo.com/k-canoe/kevlar.htm - the latest one is on http://www.myrabo.com/k-canoe/kevlarII/preparing_old_form.htm. Sand...

Stern paddle design?

I'm going to make a single blade paddle. I almost always paddle stern, and have used a beavertail style paddle for many years - it seems to work for me just fine. My inclination is to make a paddle that pretty much is the same design. I'm 5'10', fairly strong with an arm span of 6'. The paddle I'm c...

Wee Lassie Paddle

Made according to Mac's book - Alder shaft (hollow), then pine, then cedar. The "rest of the story" is available at http://www.myrabo.com/k-canoe/weelassie/9_paddle.htm. Here's a few pics: http://www.myrabo.com/k-canoe/weelassie/images/wl072206paddle1.JPG http://www.myrabo.com/k-canoe/weel...

Moran Kevlar weight

Mine's about 41 lbs - my partner's is 43 lbs. He used a heavier wood for gunwales, and a felt "nosepiece" for wear resistance.

Shrink wrap

I DO have a "Moran" form; we've made two canoes so far with it. I'm going to try shrink wrap with a release for the next ones. I'm hopin' it works well! I know of one individual that did this with an Osprey as the form - still needed ribs. See http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KevlarCanoe/ for...

Cookware

We've used these for a couple of years now. I REALLY like them (they're non-stick, though).

Paddle length

It depends on what you're doing (of course). I prefer a beavertail style when paddling stern. I like one that barely fits between my outstretched fingertips. For bow paddling, I prefer a more traditional paddle - smaller at the tip than the widest part. I only do lake paddling, so that's another dif...

Shrink wrap

That's good to hear! Did you apply anything as a release material, or just lay it up over the shrink wrap?

BTW - nice aurora pics!

Moran design

Yes - that's the "Tripper" design. You can see it in action at http://www.myrabo.com/vacations/vacation.htm (Quetico links). I'm very happy with how it paddles. It's fast, stable (when loaded) and light (42 lbs). I'd say the only down side is that it's not very stable when lightly loaded. ...
