Re: Stem questions - with pictures!

Good video, but I would suggest a slight change up.

I like to use unthickened epoxy on the joints first, then thicken the epoxy and apply a light coat, before I assemble the stack.

I think the unthickened epoxy absorbs better, then adding the thickened epoxy provides the gap filling.

Re: Stem questions - with pictures!

On the topic, just a few pics and maybe a useful tip. http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/b494/Cruiser1959/Solo%20Freedom%2016/DSC03810_zpsm6beqrba.jpg I like to add a few guide blocks when I get ready to steam bend the strips, this makes alignment a bunch easier IMO http://i1288.photobucket.com/alb...

Re: Stem questions - with pictures!

1) IMO strip thickness is not an issue from a "will it work perspective", however, going thinner means more strips and that means more surfaces to epoxy, more potential for things to slip and slide .... in other words, you just make the job more work and increase the potential for issues. ...

Re: Varnishing

Just back from a trip in Algonquin and met up with a fellow builder. He said he had his friend do a clear coat and it has lasted a long time .... so it is doable and works. Only thing to consider is that (as I understand it) you can't easily "fix" the clear coat , like you can varnish. You...

Re: Canoe seat mounting that allows for different tilt posit

That's easy Jim, the spacer block orientation isn't consistent.

I have to ponder some, but this just seems more complicated than it needs to be.

Re: Cedar Sourcing in Halifax area.

16 foot is a standard length, even for building centres (think decking), so you shouldn't have much trouble finding lumber at that length.

Now if you want to go longer, that will be a world of hurt.

Re: New birdmouth paddle

Hi Randy,

I have actually done 2 paddles now and came back to look at yours again .... the links are broken again : (

Any chance they could be freshened again?

Thanks

Re: came off the molds

I like to have a couple people help and although my garage is heated, it is too small to have a couple of people working when it's closed up. I usually take equipment outside (to make access around the canoe easier), do a thorough tidy up of the work space to make sure everything needed for doing ep...

Re: came off the molds

That is a tough question Randy and the answer also depends on how you intend to do the glassing. I like to get the 3 coats done in a day, with no sanding between coats, for that I wouldn't try it below 18C ... as the epoxy setup will be slowed, the cooler it is ... which will extend the time require...

Re: came off the molds

Concur with Jim, shim equally both sides .... so it doesn't move during glassing.

I can't imagine that small amount across 2 stations is going to have any effects that you could see or measure.

Re: came off the molds

Is this a symmetrical flex (same both sides)? How much space are we talking? Where on the hull is this (bottom, side)? I would be concerned that once you deviate from the mold shape you are off the design shape. I think I would halt until I knew what the potential impact of the "flex" away...

Re: 17' 0" Freedom

Glassing has to wait till spring and the warmer weather, when I can open the garage up. The regime will be 6 oz. inside and out, two extra layers on the bow and stern. I may go ahead and start working on the trim (seats, decks, yoke), there is a long way to go yet. I still have to finalize the desig...
