I use foam pads on my mini van. Its a 2005 Chevy Uplander and the roof rack didn't even come with cross bars just the side rails. :mad The foam pads worked out great and hold the canoe very steady. The canoe sits nicely between the side rails. The photo is is from campmor but many places carry these...

Cool looking place. Everyone's paddles seemed to have elongated blades. Is that the style there or is it a function of the type of kayaking?

The geography of the land looked interesting too. It looked to be somewhat volcanic in formation.

Just about anyting to do with the innet stem was done by hand. Once all the strips and the outer stem was on I did use a orbital to smooth out the strip's transition into the outer stem.

Get rid of the Keel. Strip out the seats and replace with one very light seat. Cut the decks down. Minimize the yoke. Grind down the gunnels.

A little off topic, but as long as the discussion is about canoes I fugure I am safe. :laughing

I believe on the cover of Canoe Craft is the old Redbird design. Look how sharp the entry is on the bow.

Off the particular topic here, but I have a few Redbird questions. I see that your " foot ball" is done in herringbone fashion. I was led to believe that this is more suited to flat bottomed , low rockered boats. The Redbird is neither of those. Did you have any problems doing it this way...

Did I install my seats too high?

Take a look at this photo of my Redbird. Did I mount my seats up too high? They are about 1" - 1 1/2" below the wales. Too high, just right or close enough?

Just to let you know it can be done. I have walnut gunwales bonded to cedar scuppers and all expoxied onto the shear line of the canoe. No problem. I used thickened Raka epoxy (silca was the thickner). http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/georgetcucchi/album?.dir=ebcb&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&...

I used ebay to get the wood I wanted for my outer stem. I used Cocobola and it bent and glued up fine. Latter I learned where to get choice wood locally so I never had to use ebay again. But it worked fine for one 60" piece.
