Glassed The Inside on Sunday, Sanded on Wednesday and...

Now I can't decide whether to put a top coat of epoxy on or just start with some varnish. It looks good. I began sanding with 150 and then went to 220. Overall, 90% has no weave line showing and only some areas near the gunwales can one see some weave. So should I give it a top coat of epoxy or just...

I glassed the inside of my canoe this past Sunday. What I did better over when I glassed the out side some six weeks ago was the following. The foam roller really helped. On the outside I just poured brushed and squeegeed. I went through three rollers on the first coat and one roller sleeve for each...

Just part of the choir. :laughing

Glue lines and excess epoxy fill will show through the glass and epxoy and should be sanded to a minimum.

I used John Miichne's double cup method of volume measuring and it work fine for me. I used Raka epoxy and it seemed pretty forgiving. A little over the line one way or another didn't seem to effect the cure time. Maybe under controlled testing there would be a perceived strength change but maybe no...

Gunwale cross section dimensions

I believe Bear Mountain recommends 3/4" x 3/4" for both inwales and outwales. Gilpatrick, I think has the the inwales at 3/4' x 3/4" but the outwales at 5/8" tall x 3/4" width. The 3/4" square outwales just seems to not look right as imagine it my head. What dimensions ...

Patricks Dad wrote:The Redbird looks great! What are you going to use for gunwales?
I will use walnut for the gunwales. I plan to use John Michn's technique for the scuppers and use Cedar for the blocks glued to the walnut.

I am building a Red Bird canoe from cypress. I just finish glassing the outside of the hull and I am currently sanding the inside hull. In my opinion, it looks great. Lots of red, grey and white tones. I bought locally and had 20' x 1" x 6" delivered. No joints in any of the strips so alll...

Red Bird Seat Dimensions

My "Hull Mold Lines" drawing got loose and blew around in the back yard for a couple of weeks. :embarassed So if another Red Bird owner could verify the following plan view seat loacations I would appreciate it. The seat to the rear measures 49 1/2" from center and the forward seat me...

According to another boating site if stainless steel is covered with epoxy it will corrode. Needs to have contact with the air to prevent corrosion. Vern I don't doubt this was mentioned on another site, but I would take issue with this. Its possible that they mistakenly installed steel bolts and n...

I bought the greenval seat plans. They seat plan was very detailed with well written instruction on the construction process. My only disapointment was that there was only a passing reference to a slding seat. There were no diagrams or instructions on how to properly construct a sliding seat.

Thwarts and Yokes

Looking through a recent issue of Boundary Waters Journal, I see many of the tripping canoes have two thwarts and a yoke. Yet the Redbird design shows only a thwart and the Freedom design shows only two thwarts. Presumably the added benefit of the extra thwarts for tie-down and support are offset by...

My thinking on using semi-gloss was to cut down on the glare from the sun and produce a soft, richer finish. Guess this was a stupid idea. Not at all. A semi-gloss finish IMHO, would have given a more natural look to the wood. After hitting the epoxy with 220 grit paper I prefered the look over the...
