Thanks Glen.
It is pretty humid today, so I think I will go the dehumidifier route as well.

Varnishing problem
I varnished the inner hull yesterday. I used Epifanes thinned 10 %. Temp yesterday was in the 80's. Not nasty muggy, though. I waited 24 hrs before getting ready for the second coat.. I had sanded the entire canoe and was vacuuming when I noticed that there was an area where varnish had accumulated....

Thanks for the information guys. Just a thought. Since lighting is such an issue when varnishing, I was thinking of using (I'm not sure the correct name of it) a miner's head lamp. The thing is worn like a hat. It always faces the area being varnished. Provides good illumination. Why not, eh? Has an...

Foam brush & varnish
Hey,
I am about to varnish the canoe. I bought foam brushes which state on the handle, 'not for shellac or lacquer'. Of course I noticed this after I bought them. Would they be suitable for Epifanes varnish? They seem to be of good quality.
Thanks
Pete

Epoxy
Hi,
I would agree with Kent about a video. I was daunted about the whole project so I purchased Ted Moore's video. There is a good section on fibreglassing. The sound quality isr poor, but the video shows the entire canoe building process.

Bob leaps from cradle!
Yep, My Bob's Special fell off the cradle today. I wanted to sand the outside hull so my son and I flipped the canoe over. Basically I used the crescent shape which is left over when you cut the molds out. I used 3/4" plywood and put each at the #5 position of the strongback, with pool 'noodles...

Bob's Special
Hey Dave, Thanks for the encouragement. I will be using Epifanes and foam brushes. I heard that Glen got excellent results with the Epifanes. Of course I am concerned about the dreaded dust and runs. (maybe its a canoe builing disease) Any suggestions would be great. I will give the canoe a final sa...

Hi Guys, This is the latest pic I have. Since this I have routered the gunnels with 1/4" bit and put 3 coats of epoxy. I made the decks and thwart but bought the seats. Almost ready for the varnish. I must have it ready for the Rendezvous!! Pete http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/peter555/D...

trim finish
While working on the canoe today, I think I changed my mind re: applying epxoy. I guess I don't want to take the risk of the ash discoloring. One concern is the amount of time between coats. Ideally you are supposed to wait a week before sanding the epoxy. Could I put one coat on and then wait a cou...

Getting back to Dave's posting, I plan to store my canoe in the garage at all times when not in use. This will obviously allow maximum protection from the elements (and canoe rustlers). With this in mind I think that if I just varnish the gunnels and keep my eye on them, they should be fine. I might...
